2) - Rabbi's Message

Parshat HaShavu'a - This week's Torah portion is Parshaht Ehmor - פרשת אמור. This portion includes two beautiful features of the Meeshkan and the Holy Temple- the Menorah and the twelve Chalot laid out anew each Shabbat. There are also laws governing the ancient priesthood of Aaron and his descendants, the Kohahneem. Then (in Leviticus, ch. 23) we have a detailed set of teachings about the festivals of the year, beginning with Shabbat, and running from Pass-over to Shavu'ot to Sukkot, following the growing season from early spring through the harvest in the fall.

It is in Parshat Ehmor that we learn about counting the days from Pesach to Shavu'ot, as the grain crop ripened and the nation's suste- nance was assured and celebrated at the end of the seven weeks of "Counting the Omer" - ספירת העומר - S'feeraht Ha-Ohmehr. This mitzvah - which connects us with the Land of Israel and the agricultural cycle, and helps us prepare to receive the gift of Torah, on Shavu'ot - has been observed and cherished by our people in every generation. This week (Thurs. night and Friday, May 1) we are starting the 5th week of counting; that is the 29th day of the Omer. This coming Mon- day night and Tuesday are the 33rd day of counting the Omer, which is the holiday known as "Lahg ba-Ohmer" (Lahg-ל"ג means Thirty-Three).

Parshat Ehmor may be found in any Bible, in Leviticus, chapters 21-24, or in the Hertz Chumash on pp. 513-528. You may also find it on line, in the Conservative chumash, Etz Hayim, pp. 717-733, along with modern translation and commentaries, as well as the Haftarah, at this link:

https://www.rabbinicalassembly.org/sites/default/files/2021-04/Emor ETZ HAYIM.pdf

The Haftarah from the prophet Ezekiel 44:15-31 (pp. 528-30 in the Hertz Chumash, and pp. 735-7 in Etz Hayim) clearly connects to the Torah portion's teachings about the priesthood and the Temple; Ezekiel shares his vision of a new, revitalized "Second" Temple to be built and to inspire the nation, after the forced Exile in Babylonia and our return to the Land of Israel. Addressing all the people, the Holy One's messen-ger says (44:24) "They shall preserve and observe My teachings and my laws regarding all My holy days, and they shall make my Sabbaths holy".

I look forward to enjoying Shabbat together with you and our synagogue family.

Shabbat Shalom, Rabbi Yechiel
