2) - Rabbi's Message

PARSHAT HA-SHAVU'A - Parshat Nahsoh - פרשת נשוא - This wide- ranging Torah portion continues the opening theme of the beginning of the 4th book of the Torah, BeMidbar - "In the Desert" (a.k.a. Numbers) with the preparations to depart Mt. Sinai and head for our new home in the Land of Israel. The census of the Israelites is completed (by counting the Levite clans) and a ceremony is held for the Dedication ("Chanukkah" - חנוכה) of the portable sanctuary, the Meeshkahn (7:1-89). We also learn about the Nazirite (ch. 6), a person who decides to refrain from wine and strong drink, to dedicate themselves to sacred matters and mitzvot for a period of time; and about the strange and disturbing ordeal of women accused of adultery (5:11-31) - a practice which our Sages put an end to, thankfully, in the 1st century CE.

The portion also includes the beautiful blessing - "May the Holy One bless you and keep you ... shine Divine light upon you ... and give you peace and well-being ... יברכך ה' וישמרך" - which Aharon & his children and all their descendants (the Kohanim) are commanded to bestow upon the people of Israel daily (Numbers 6:22-27). These sacred words are part of our daily prayers and have been adapted for blessing children and grandchildren gathered to welcome Shabbat, to bless bride and groom under the Chuppah, and for numerous other sacred occasions in Jewish life. These verses are known as Beerkaht Kohahneem - ברכת כהנים - or, the Priestly Blessing.

You may find this Parshah in any Bible in Numbers 4:21-7:89, in the Hertz Chumash on pp. 586-601; and on pp. 791-811 in Etz Hayim. You may also read it on line at

https://www.sefaria.org/Numbers.4.21-7.89?lang=bi&aliyot=0

Our Haftarah tells of the extraordinary experience of a childless couple who are to become the parents of Samson - Shimshon ha-Gibor - a famous Nazirite, warrior and deeply flawed hero. The story is from Judges 13:2-25. It is in Etz Hayim on pp. 813-5 and in the Hertz Chumash on pp. 602-4. You may find it on line at this link:

https://www.sefaria.org/Judges.13.2-25?lang=bi

I look forward to welcoming Shabbat with you at our Kabbalat Shabbat service on Friday afternoon (5:30-6:45 PM) and to enjoying Shabbat services and Kiddush with you on the Sabbath day.

I wish you a peaceful, restful and enjoyable Shabbos.

Shabbat Shalom - שבת שלום

Rabbi Yechiel
