Dear CCUSD Community,
As we move into the heart of October, I want to take a moment to celebrate the incredible work happening across our schools. Every week, I am reminded of the dedication, creativity, and care that define our community—from our students’ enthusiasm for learning to the tireless efforts of our teachers, administrators, and support staff. Together, we continue to make Culver City Unified School District a place where every student is inspired and empowered to thrive.
As part of our #CelebrateCCUSD initiative, I’m proud to share that our schools were recently honored by the Educational Results Partnership (ERP) organization. ERP is a nonprofit organization that applies data science to improve student outcomes and career readiness across the educational system. Their mission is to ensure more students enter the workforce with the skills needed to succeed in today’s global economy. This year, our district received a STAR Award recognizing our district-wide progress in student achievement. In addition, La Ballona Elementary, El Rincon Elementary, and Culver City Middle School were also named STAR Schools. What makes this recognition truly special is that ERP awards are based not only on overall growth, but also on increased achievement within key student groups, reflecting our shared commitment to equity and excellence for all learners. Congratulations and thank you to our students, teachers, staff, administrators and families for this outstanding accomplishment!
| | |
We are also proud to share that El Rincon Elementary was recently recognized by Innovate Public Schools, a nonprofit organization that monitors student achievement data and highlights schools that are making significant progress in closing achievement gaps. El Rincon was honored for increasing student achievement among Latino and African American students—a powerful testament to the school’s commitment to ensuring that every child has the opportunity to succeed. Congratulations and thank you to the students, teachers, staff, principal, and families!
In closing, as we celebrate these academic accomplishments, we also look forward to connecting as a community at two wonderful events this weekend: the Art Walk & Roll Festival on Saturday and the Farragut Fall Festival. These are events you won’t want to miss—filled with creativity, fun, and community spirit! We know you have many options for your child's education, but thank you for choosing CCUSD!
With gratitude,
Dr. Alfonso Jiménez
Superintendent of Schools

Superintendente
Distrito Escolar Unificado de Culver City
| | Meet Student Board Member Jordan Kang | | |
Culver City High School senior Jordan Kang has always wanted to make a difference, and he knows that difference starts on-campus working with his fellow students every single day.
"I'm about creating change and doing something for me that I find fulfilling," said the 17-year-old, who serves as CCUSD's Student Board Member. "I want to make sure that our school environment is better. That is something that has always been really important to me."
Kang served as Junior Class President last year and is on the Senior Class Council for the 2025-2026 school year. He said he has enjoyed working hard in a variety of on-campus clubs. He is president of the MESA Club, a school-based club for Mathematics, Engineering, Science, Achievement, that supports students in STEM fields through hands-on competitions, academic counseling, and mentorship.
In addition, he is proud of his involvement with the Green New Deal, a student-led plan for the District that focuses on improving sustainability in schools through initiatives like curriculum changes and waste reduction.
"We are making sustainable changes and promoting sustainability for everyone," said Kang, who added that he plans to attend a four-year university and major in environmental or chemical engineering.
As for his experience at CCHS, he said it's all about the people.
"I like a lot of the people at Culver," he said. "We have a diverse set of people who are really great and support you. I'm really proud to be who I am here."
| | CCHS Girls Flag Football Team Wraps Up Season, Looks to Continue Ascent | | |
Girls flag football is one of the fastest growing sports in the nation, and the Culver City High School girls' team is trying to keep up with that growth. Last year the team produced the first team in school history and ended the season with a record of 5-14. The 2025 team improved to 7-11.
The season ended last Tuesday in a loss to Santa Monica on the road; but if you watch this team play, you have a feeling the program will only get better. They seem to be learning the game and having fun. That's a winning combination in sports.
"There is a lot of improvement from last year," said first year coach, Ramsy Lambert after their Senior Day game a few weeks ago. "The girls have caught on to my intensity and fundamentally we have gotten better as football players. To win more games we need to start off faster offensively and score points early. On defense we really fly to the ball."
They are led by several very good players. Kennedy Naylor, Haily Gonzalez, Nia Jones and Imani Gonzalez are just a few of the players that played well this season.
"I just started playing this year," said senior Imani Gonzalez on Senior Day. "I just wanted to try it. Now I really like it. I like how competitive it is. We started the season really rocky, but we are improving every week.
Another senior is Simone Jones, a second-year player. "I love playing for Culver City. It's my outlet honestly. Our offense needs to be a little better, but we are having fun. We are more of a physical team, but we do have some speedy people on the team."

| | CCUSD Celebrates Disabilities Awareness Month | | |
Disabilities Awareness Month is in full swing around the Culver City Unified School District. This week, the Board of Education officially recognized October as Disabilities Awareness Month at its October 14 meeting. In so doing, the Board acknowledged the importance of learning about disability history and creating an inclusive environment for individuals with disabilities. The full text of the proclamation can be seen HERE. Copies of this proclamation will be provided to each school so they can be proudly displayed.
If you've spent time around the Culver City High School campus recently, you may have noticed a different flag raised – the Disabilities Awareness flag created in 2019 by writer Ann Magill, who has cerebral palsy.
Fourth and fifth grade students at La Ballona are making daily announcements, sharing information with their peers about different disabilities throughout the month. Fourth grader Charlie Vila announced information about dyslexia earlier this month.

| | PTA Reflections Art Contest Accepting Entries Until November 3 | | |
The theme for this year’s annual contest is “I Belong!”
PARTICIPATION IS EASY, EXCITING AND EMPOWERING!
All students attending PTA schools sponsoring the program are invited to participate and submit original artwork in one of six areas:
- Dance Choreography
- Literature
- Photography
- Film Production
- Music Composition
- Visual Arts
Artworks are submitted to school-level PTAs, where they are first recognized, celebrated and judged by grade-level divisions at their school unit. Winning works from the schools units, then advance to the Council PTA level where they are judged among entries from all the local Culver City schools. Winners from the council level are recognized at a school board meeting before advancing to District, and then potentially to State and National PTA Reflections art competition rounds.
To submit a work of art to the Reflections competition, please inquire with your unit’s PTA president or program chair.
Reflections has been bringing the arts to life for more than 10 million students since 1969. California State PTA and its members, families and kids are on the forefront of this amazing program, which increases community awareness of the importance of arts in education.
Reflections encourages students of all ages to:
-
Unleash creative talents and be inspired
-
Express themselves imaginatively in their artwork
-
Experience the fun and joy of making art
-
Tap into critical thinking skills to create art inspired by the annual theme
