Use Your Career to Fund Your Success!
I moved to Denver with no job, no friends, $1000 in the bank in 1999. January 1999. A nice property manager at a high-rise in Capitol Hill approved me for a lease without a job. I remember walking out of her office with her words, “do you think you can get a job quickly?” and my response, “Yes, of course.” running over and over in my mind.

I was interviewing for office jobs and beginning to get frustrated. I’m guessing they took one look at this sweet girl from Iowa and said, “she won’t last.” To he honest, there were many times I was second guessing my move. The lowest of the low was when I had to scrape together change to buy dinner at Taco Bell.

So with $0 in the bank, I chose success over career. I was hired on the spot at Foleys (now Macys) women’s shoe department. I worked my butt off, literally. It became a contest to see if I could help more people than the other employees, and then it turned into a contest with myself when there was no contest. I remember going to an outdoor taco place in Cherry Creek (no longer there but super yummy) with an older fellow employee. She praised how well I was doing and said, “Someday you could be making $18,000/year like me.”

The next day I started applying for other jobs. I found one selling Norwalk Furniture. Liz was the store manager. I decided to wear my faux fur vest and let’s just say a more interesting outfit and it worked! I was hired on the spot. It was custom and high-end furniture and the other girls were all designers, so I was a bit out of my league. I just hit the floor running and the next thing you know I have all the girls upset with me and it was turning into a not very fun place to work.

So, my aspirations of getting an entry level position in a high-rise in downtown Denver and beginning my climb of the career ladder didn’t pan out, however it finally did 5 years and 3 more jobs later. But by then I was focused more on life, than on career. I ended up meeting some amazing friends, a couple not so amazing boyfriends, and my chocolate lab Mocha who was my best friend from 2000 to 2013. I just focused on having fun and the work part seemed to work itself out. My goals turned from making money to just making fun, and it was fun! I’m just glad there was no social media back then!

So, I just continued on my path of success (happiness) over career which gradually reversed after meeting my future husband. After getting caught up in career again for a few years, the universe sent my kids and a near death experience to remind me of what is important. I had a new definition of success (make my kids proud). Even as babies I was setting the stage for my real estate career to help me fund my success. I started writing and painting and running again and now almost 12 years later I keep learning and growing and accepting what life has to offer me. Doing my best to continue to fund my success. My kids are proud of me, and even though I never thought I was going to have kids I defied the odds yet again and am now the mother to two miracle babies who are smarter than me by far! The things that come out of their mouths amaze me every day, so I take that as I am doing a great job at being a mother or they are doing a great job at being kids!

I try to see every day as a new chance to start over… letting all failures or what may be seen as failures (lost client, undone laundry, finances, taxes, the pile of boxes and trash in the garage, the half painted cabinets, the hideous master bathroom that I said I would remodel immediately!) fall away and focus on the things that bring you joy. I love going to my office. It’s a quiet, calming space that is always clean! I work in a Hallmark movie setting. You can’t even put a price on that. My definition of success these days is showing up. I show up to work even when I don’t want to. I show up for my kids and say yes to playing with them even when I’m tired. I show up to exercise.. although this winter break was a bust on that one. Today is a new day right?! I continue to show up for my clients because I love them all. They are helping me fund my success and I can never be more grateful to them!

I’m doing two things this year. I’m branching out in my career to find a way to support other small businesses through my media company. I had started this back in 2015 and then just as quickly as it started… life happened. This media company was new, it wasn’t funding my success but just something I like to do, so my focus returned to my kids and my son’s ASD diagnosis and school support. Until you go through that, you would never believe how intense the struggle is to get services and support for your kids when you need it. Being on call 24-7 just in case he blows up at school. Then finding support groups, therapy wait lists (still on one waitlist, can you imagine), paying over $8,000 in out of pocket therapy expenses in one year, and so many accommodations at home and school. We are finally over the hump and easing into a routine that may last well into his twenties or forever, but I can finally see the light at the end of the tunnel. I’m ready to focus some energy once again on my business and media company to continue my journey forward in this unpredictable world!

Second, I’m going to write another book. Not sure what kind of book yet, but I think either a motivational guide to success or a fiction based on true-story account of moms in suburbia. We’ll see what comes out of my head.

So, just remember if I can watch hours of tv every day, run a real estate business and a half marathon, raise two special needs kids, start a media company, and write a book in one year… You can do whatever you want too! Don’t rule anything out… just focus on what brings you joy and you will find your own success!

Update to my previous story of Mary Ann... and unexpected outcomes.. after I published my newsletter, the previous buyers came back and she is now moved to Parker! It was meant to be! I'm so happy for her ! Now I can focus on new clients and unexpected adventures for 2019!

My client, Hugo, who I sold a condo in downtown to in December is legally blind. He's 88 and by all accounts you would think he should go to an assisted living facility and spend $5000/month. His portfolio is worth millions so he could probably do that, but he just couldn't leave his stomping grounds of downtown just yet. Using his fixed income, he was able to secure a reverse mortgage to purchase a condo and he is happily living out his final years in a very nicely updated loft for $0/month payment. He is so smart and fun to talk to. He has stories you wouldn't believe! However, I'm sure his kids, one of them being a client of mine also, don't enjoy his independence and outspokenness as much as I do! :-)

I understand worrying about parents as my mom is thinking of selling her cute condo and nomad-ing it across Iowa. I like the idea of having that permanent place that you won't have to leave at age 88 if you don't want to. Renting is always hit or miss and not to mention a waste of money compared to recent real estate appreciation rates! Anyway, my mom also is very independent so she will do as she wishes. And I admire her for that of course! So, I treat my clients like family and advise them as I would my own mother or family! It's not about the $$. It's always about making my client happy!

My clients are not just a number to me.
The luxury of having a small company is that I remember every one of my clients. I also remember the ones I don't get.. which are few and far between.. but not everyone is going to agree with me. I will never forget how my clients have helped me to get where I am today! You directly support my family, my kids, and me. So.. Thank You from the bottom of my heart!

If you feel comfortable doing so, please share my newsletter and write a review on Zillow, Facebook business page, or just send me an email! And if you have yet to do a deal with me, then maybe it's time!?

Thank you to everyone that trusted me to help them in 2018 and referred me! Together we created over 16 happy clients! and that makes me happy! You are absolutely wonderful and I appreciate it and my family appreciates it so immensely!

Quick shout out to Artie! Another for the record books: He grabbed the #1 spot 2nd year in a row with his investment purchase in Capitol Hill and his personal home purchase in Castle Pines Village! (Want to go for 3? hehe!)
In managing his multifamily, we have increased the rents and capital improvements to the point of increasing the value over $250K in 6 months. Just knowing how to do this in a market like this takes confidence and risk. Let me help you find your investment!
