Chabot College and Sacramento State Sign MOU to Advance Transfer Pathway

(Hayward, Calif., April 29, 2025) – Chabot College (Chabot) is excited to announce the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with California State University, Sacramento (Sacramento State) that increases pathways to four-year universities for Chabot students.

The signing of the MOU took place in Hayward on March 18, 2025, between Chabot (represented by President Jamal A. Cooks, Ph.D.) and Sacramento State (represented by President J. Luke Wood, Ph.D.). The agreement underlines the importance of cultivating partnerships that foster transfer opportunities to four-year universities, including institutions that provide additional support for students interested in understanding the history, life, culture, and contributions of Black individuals. These opportunities are open to all students.

Sacramento State offers a unique educational opportunity through its Black Honors College (BHC) program, an enhanced cocurricular experience designed to empower scholars with the academic, professional, and personal skills essential for economic independence, self-determination, and bold, transformative leadership. Transfer students are eligible to apply to be a part of BHC every spring.

While the MOU signing occurred in March, Chabot is celebrating this partnership in observance of Black Student Success Week (BSSW), which occurred last week throughout the California Community College system. During the week of April 21-25, 2025, the California Community College system offered webinars and activities aimed at supporting and ensuring the success of Black and African American students in community colleges and beyond. The theme of this year’s BSSW was Lift Up, Level Up: The Rise of Black Serving Institutions. Chabot is helping “Lift Up and Level Up” Black students with this MOU and through other partnerships and on-campus programs.

“Black Student Success Week allows our college to highlight the many ways we are serving our Black and African American students to help them reach their goals,” said President Cooks. “By signing the MOU with Sacramento State, we are showing our students that their opportunities are without limit and that we operate within a network of educational institutions that share in our vision of support and success.”

Chabot College continues to pioneer new approaches to uplifting students in their educational and personal journeys. To learn more about Chabot’s offerings, go to www.chabotcollege.edu/.
