From the office of the executive vice president and chancellor

Dear Health Sciences faculty and staff,

The WSU Spokane campus has long prided itself on maintaining our buildings, pathways, and green spaces to a high standard of excellence, creating an inviting and safe environment for our students and our employees to learn and work. We recognize that the campus experience plays a vital role in student recruitment efforts as well as meeting college accreditation standards and attracting valuable employee talent. As we navigate budget reductions, these factors remain critically important to our campus leadership.

The cleanliness, safety, and performance of our campus will continue to be the highest priority for our maintenance, grounds, and custodial teams. However, to address the budget deficit, the WSU Spokane campus Facilities Operations unit is required to make workforce reductions, resulting in adjustments to the scope of core services. Crucially, certain operational aspects of our campus will need to become a shared responsibility that all personnel support through proactive and preventative activities. The information below details the anticipated changes and the scope of services, effective July 1.

Building and Mechanical Maintenance

Ongoing building maintenance will remain a central part of Facilities Operations services. However, due to staffing, wait times for service requests may increase, particularly if third-party contractors are required to address specialized equipment issues. Maintenance needs will be prioritized based on the level of impact on campus operations, and response to low-priority needs and requests will be delayed.

Custodial Services

Custodial personnel and resources will primarily focus on high-traffic areas such as restrooms, corridors, and lobbies to ensure the cleanliness and safety of these spaces. Classrooms, conference rooms, and offices will be cleaned on a less frequent basis, and the overall cleanliness of these spaces will become a shared community responsibility to account for reduced staffing.

Grounds & Landscape Care

Grounds activities, landscape maintenance, and snow removal will shift to a priority focus on the continued safety and accessibility of high-traffic areas at the core of campus. However, the overall frequency of certain activities such as mowing, pruning, and trash collection will be reduced.

Event Set-up and Equipment Moves

Facilities Operations personnel will support event set-up, equipment moves, or furniture moves on a limited basis throughout the academic year, rather than year-round. These services will be supported from December 1 through March 31.

From April 1 through November, campus and college areas must coordinate, perform, and/or hire contractors to implement event set-up, equipment moves, or furniture moves. This will include set-up and support for student events.

Within the transition period of July 1- November 30, equipment and furniture move requests or events currently scheduled in 25Live will be honored. However, the team will not be able to accommodate new requests until December 1.

Units can anticipate receiving additional information regarding these changes as they become operationalized. In the meantime, questions can be directed to Jon Schad, Director of Campus Facilities at schad@wsu.edu.
