Spring Hill United Church of Christ
Dear Familia (Family):

I hope that all of you and your families are well and safe. Elsa kicked up some winds yesterday, July 7th. Working in the office, I heard something. It sounded like a light alarm or buzzard. When I looked outside, the trees were shaking like I have not previously experienced them, and it was pouring outside. I left the church office as none of us want to be caught in a Tropical storm, winds and pouring rain. Are you all doing well? If there are issues that you have experienced, please let us know. We want to help if you need us.

I’m sitting right now (9:35 a.m.) at Tower Radiology as I await one more test before I head to Tampa General tomorrow morning, July 8th. I am scheduled to arrive at TGH at 11:30 a.m. for a 2:30 p.m. procedure. My trust is in God’s grace and my sincere belief that God always carries us in the Palm of God’s hand.

I’m ready and after some coaching, I finally was able to coordinate a few doctors talking to each other. I could not allow each doctor to operate in their silos. I need a team. It’s just like the church. We are so much better together than those who see themselves as an army of one. We are in this together. Our call is to engage and welcome all of God’s people.

I was taken off warfarin (coumadin) last Friday, July 2nd and they have begun the bridge process of transitioning from that medication to one that will protect me from a stoke prior and after the procedure. Do any of you also feel like it’s a full-time position to get your care givers to communicate and agree on a plan of care? How do you or have you navigated this in the past?

I ask your prayers tomorrow and throughout the recovery period. Pray for my medical team, the doctors, nurses, staff, and surgical team that will operate on me. Also, pray that I may know, feel, and sense your and God’s presence with me.

This Sunday, July 11, 2021, Nancy Rosado, Sargent NYPD Retired, who was a first responder on 9/11 as we were attacked by international terrorists. Nancy was also a first responder at the Pulse Massacre, June 12, 2016. For me, having lived in Orlando and danced on that dance floor during Latinx(e) nights while I lived there. This attack, as I have experienced it, was a direct attack on Latinx(e) peoples, our cultures, families and our bodies. They attacked us as we danced to the rhythms of our soul. Mothers, fathers, LGBTQIA+ peoples, straight folks, blacks, whites, and Latinos(as) created community in that environment where we felt safe. We NO LONGER feel safe. That, however, is a story for another day.

Nancy will be our guest preacher. Many of you stated that you really enjoyed her message during our Service of Remembrance honoring those murdered and impacted by the Pulse massacre. I trust that you will enjoy her this Sunday. Please join us this Sunday, July 11th at 10:00 a.m. for our communal worship experience.

Lastly, I love you and thank you for being blessings to our church, our community and to me, as your pastor.

Warmest regards,
Pastor Justo
A church planning committee has been created and assigned the responsibility of developing a Church Profile to be used by a future search committee to select a “settled” (permanent) pastor for our Church. The committee is not making any decisions regarding our future pastor but is creating a document to better characterize our church for prospective candidates. Pastor Justo will be one of the candidates considered for this position as allowed by his title of “Designated Pastor.”
The committee wants this process to be transparent and involve as many church members/friends as possible. During August, church members/friends will be asked to complete a simple survey to better characterize church attendees for prospective candidates. During September, the committee will convene a simple dinner/lunch on two different dates to allow members/friends to express their desired traits of a future pastor and provide input to a few questions regarding the direction of the church over the next five years. And finally, church members will have the opportunity to review and approve the draft church profile. Our goal is to have the church profile complete by mid-October.
Members of the profile planning committee include Donna Ives, Ron & Trish Phillips, Lynette Dauphin Grabowski, and Tom St Clair. Please contact one of these individuals if you have any questions regarding the process of developing the church profile.
