September 2024 Newsletter

Dear Neighbor,

Public Safety is one of the most critical issues in every City. I cannot give enough accolades to the men and women of the Fort Lauderdale Police Department for the exceptional job that they do every single day serving and protecting our residents. As neighbors reach out to my office directly regarding safety concerns, I am very aware of the need for information to be shared and communicated throughout our community. The Community Support Division of FLPD combines citizens and police working in partnership to reduce neighborhood crime and enhance the quality of life by seeking innovative solutions for better crime control.

These officers faithfully attend our neighborhood association meetings and share statistics, brief neighbors on trends that are happening and most importantly, listen to concerns that are brought forth. In my recent meetings with Chief Schultz, we discussed not only District 2 neighbor concerns, but also how evaluating simple landscaping and design concepts can improve security for your home (Crime Prevention through Environmental Design/CPTD).

Exterior of your home

  • Bushes should be trimmed lower than three feet or below windows.
  • Tree branches should be trimmed higher than six feet.
  • Landscaping should not create blind spots or hiding places. Walkways and landscaping should “direct” visitors to the proper entrance and away from private areas.
  • Address numbers should be placed in obvious places, not hidden under landscaping and should be well lit during the night hours.
  • Motion sensors lighting can be used alongside bedroom areas, front entryways and strategically placed around other zones of the home.
  • LOOK OUT FOR ONE ANOTHER- Talk with your neighbors about suspicious activity in your neighborhood. Do not be afraid to call the police for your neighbor if something seems suspicious.

Doors

  • All exterior doors should be constructed of steel or aluminum alloy, solid-core hardwood or be impact-resistant. All glass doors should have impact resistant glass.
  • All secondary doors should have a secondary deadbolt lock.
  • Sliding doors can be secured by using dowels; laced in the interior tracks, pin locks, kick planes and/or auxiliary locks.
  • View finders should be installed in front doors to allow 180-degree view.

Garage

  • Secure side doors and windows just like the other areas of your home.
  • Secure and lock garage doors when you are not in or within visible sign of the garage.
  • Ensure the garage has proper lighting if used as an entrance into the home.

Windows

  • Installing impact resistant glass with protective covering can help reduce windows being smashed.
  • Auxiliary locking systems can help prevent windows from being pried open.
  • Use curtains or blinds to keep persons from looking into your home.

If you would like more information on the above guidelines, it is important to note that neighbors can request a security survey by the police. This is a free service and offers in-depth tips on home and personal security. For more valuable tips on strengthening the security of your residence, please go to Fort Lauderdale Police Department | Home (flpd.gov) Again, I can’t thank FLPD enough for their dedication to our neighbors and the community at large. We are so fortunate to have an amazing team of men and women serving and protecting the City of Fort Lauderdale.

Thank you to NBC 6’s Ari Odzer for a well- balanced report on the City of Fort Lauderdale’s homelessness initiatives and for giving me the opportunity to elaborate on our efforts. We are aggressively dealing with this issue and not only complying with the new state law taking effect on October 1, but going even further.

A ribbon-cutting ceremony will be held on Wednesday, October 2, 2024, at 11:30 a.m. at 316 Mola Avenue, where city officials and community leaders will gather to celebrate the completion of this project. Additional details will be added to this page as soon as they become available.

General Election Dates and Deadlines

You Must Re-Apply to Vote by Mail for the General Election on November 5th, 2024

Due to a change in state law, Florida Voters who wish to receive a Vote-by-Mail ballot for 2023 through 2024 elections are required to complete a new Vote-by-Mail ballot request.

In 2021, Florida legislators passed a new law that changed the basic rule for mail-in ballots. Previously, a Florida voter's request for a mail-in ballot would be good for two general election cycles, meaning a new request would not be needed for four years. The new law reduces that duration to once per general election cycle, or every two years. As a result, every vote-by-mail request expired at the end of 2022.

To renew your Vote-by-Mail request, in Broward, click on this linkMail Ballot Request Service.

In the City of Fort Lauderdale, our diversity makes us stronger. We are a welcoming and inclusive community that demonstrates respect for each and every resident and visitor. It is not a secret that these are challenging times in our state and nation for many minorities and that is why I am always more than happy when invited to speak on these issues. Thank you to the Federal Club of the Human Rights Campaign and to Pastor Luke Harrigan of local Haitian Radio for the opportunity to be with you and support you.

Always a pleasure to attend and support our local businesses at a Greater Fort Lauderdale Chamber of Commerce event! We heard from Matthew Caldwell, CEO of the Florida Panthers. We are still celebrating!
