February 2024 Newsletter:

Dear Neighbor,

On January 19th, the City held its annual goal setting workshop and outlined our District and City-wide goals and priorities for Fiscal Year 2025. Staff compiled the feedback, grouped the ideas into categories, and presented a draft of the City Commission Priorities for consideration at the February 9th Conference meeting. On February 20th, the Commission unanimously voted to approve these goals and priorities.

The FY 2025 City Commission priorities include:

·      Public Safety

·      Homeless Initiatives

·      Affordable Housing and Economic Development

·      Transportation and Traffic

·      Infrastructure and Resilience

·      Public Spaces and Community Initiatives

Once again, I want to thank all of the District 2 neighborhoods for their input prior to our goal setting workshop; all our items are detailed in the approved document below. Our District 2 neighborhood presidents have related how the city goals apply to their specific residents. My office has taken notes, and we will begin working on those priorities immediately. That feedback, along with the input from our February 8th Neighborhood Association Presidents’ Roundtable will help us forge ahead, making 2024 yet another impactful year!

Las Olas Utility Undergrounding Update

Post Date: February 22, 2024 3:00 PM

Temporary Power Outage Notice on Royal Palm Drive

Beginning at approximately 10 a.m. on Monday, February 26, 2024, Florida Power and Light (FPL) and Ferreira Construction Co., Inc. crews will remove power lines from a concrete pole located Las Olas Boulevard at Isle of Palms Drive that provides power to Royal Palm Drive. The power lines will be rerouted a new underground switch on Las Olas Boulevard at San Marco Drive.

All properties along Royal Palm Drive will experience a temporary power outage for up to two hours while this work is completed.

This power conversion process will only take place along Las Olas Boulevard in the areas described above. Access inside homes along Royal Palm Drive is not required. All construction team members will have visible proof of identification.

Temporary Power Outage Notice on Las Olas Isles

The following update only applies to neighbors on Bontona Avenue that remains to be converted to underground power. All other isles have been converted.

Crews are converting individual properties from the existing overhead power to the new underground power. This process requires shutting off power to each residence for up to 2 hours (minimum shutoff time is 30 minutes). Crews will attempt to knock on the door and let residents know in advance of the power shutoff at each property.

Residents with special needs (necessary equipment, dialysis machines, etc.) that cannot be disabled should contact Senior Project Manager Gary Foster at 954-828-6233 or [email protected] as soon as possible to make appropriate arrangements.

This power conversion process will only take place in the exterior of each home as crews will need to access the existing meters and connection points. Access inside homes is not required and all construction team members will have visible proof of identification.

Recently Completed Activities

The following work has taken place over the past few days:

  • Ferreira has converted all residences on all streets except Bontona Avenue to underground power.
  • AT&T has converted all residences on Mola Avenue and Isle of Capri Drive.

Ongoing Work by Utility Companies

Utility companies are also making progress:

  • Comcast has completed the pre-wiring on all streets and will commence individual residence fiber optic wiring next week.
  • AT&T has commenced residence hookups.
  • Comcast has hooked up its new power supply on Las Olas Boulevard that will power all residence conversions.

Upcoming Activities (Through 3/8/24)

The following work is scheduled to take place over the next few days:

  • Ferreira will energize the transformers and begin conversions on Bontona Avenue.
  • Ferreira will be completing restoration work on all streets.

Upcoming Activities

The following activities remain to be completed as part of this project.

  • Residential power conversions on Bontona Avenue, Coconut Isle Drive and San Marco Drive.
  • Residential connections to new Comcast and ATT lines.
  • Restoration of landscaping and pavers.
  • Removal of overhead lines and poles.
  • Roadway resurfacing.
  • Installation of 77 new streetlights.

Project Overview

  • Construction Schedule: Just days after the City Commission approved the ordinance establishing the process for communities seeking undergrounding on May 18, 2010, Las Olas Isles neighbors applied and began efforts to make this project a reality. A groundbreaking ceremony was celebrated on June 14, 2022, officially marking the start of construction. Mayor Dean J. Trantalis and District 2 Commissioner Steve Glassman spoke at the event and have been closely monitoring the project's progress since then. "Many thanks to the residents for their patience these past twelve years. Getting this project started has been a priority of mine since being elected in 2018," said Commissioner Glassman. The construction schedule has been extended due to unforeseen circumstances including inclement weather, additional work, and revisions to the original contract. Substantial completion is now expected in February 2024 and final restoration is expected to be completed by the end of March 2024.
  • Contractor & Sub-Contractors: Ferreira, International Drilling, Inc. (IDD), Voss Engineering, OY Underground, and Best Underground.
  • Construction Method: Utility conduits were installed using horizontal directional drilling. This trenchless method is more efficient than traditional open-cut construction and resulted in less disruption to roads and traffic. Construction has been done primarily from west to east, but some operations may vary due to unforeseen conflicts or tidal impacts.

Traffic Impacts

  • A single lane along each isle may be closed during work hours. Traffic control personnel will assist motorists as needed. Please follow posted signs and drive with caution in the area.
  • There may be times when equipment or materials temporarily block access to driveways during work hours. Crews in the field will coordinate with neighbors during these situations.
  • Driveway and roadway access will be restored at the end of each work shift.

We apologize in advance for any inconvenience and thank our neighbors for their continued patience as we work to complete this project as quickly as possible.

You Must Re-Apply to Vote by Mail

Due to a change in state law, Florida Voters who wish to receive a Vote-by-Mail ballot for 2023 through 2024 elections are required to complete a new Vote-by-Mail ballot request.

In 2021, Florida legislators passed a new law that changed the basic rule for mail-in ballots. Previously, a Florida voter's request for a mail-in ballot would be good for two general election cycles, meaning a new request would not be needed for four years. The new law reduces that duration to once per general election cycle, or every two years. As a result, every vote-by-mail request expired at the end of 2022.

To renew your Vote-by-Mail request, in Broward, click on this link: Mail Ballot Request Service.
