January 2023 Newsletter

Dear Neighbor,

My office receives many emails and phone calls about various code issues and that is why I want to begin the year by spotlighting our amazing Community Enhancement and Compliance Division and informing you of the improvements we have made. Assisting you with vacation rental violations, noise issues and blight will always be a priority to me in District 2 and with the tremendous population growth in the last two years, the City has an even greater responsibility to provide a safe and enjoyable environment for our neighbors. I want to give you some detailed information about the services offered by our Community Enhancement and Compliance Division including the addition of several new staff members and added enforcement hours.

This Division is comprised of 50 code and administrative professionals who are dedicated to building relationships with our neighbors. Their neighborhood action plans have been created with an emphasis on preventing and quickly eliminating blight in the community, equipping our neighbors with the resources they need to help us maintain the ambiance of the community and to encourage business growth through the beautification of our commercial communities.

To meet the needs of our commUNITY, with an emphasis on UNITY, our code officers are now available seven days a week and they pride themselves on responding within 48 hours of received complaints. Their ability to address concerns in a timely manner is enhanced by the night team’s extended working hours of Thursday – Sunday, 5:00 pm - 3:00 am.

As always, they serve the neighbors professionally, equally, with integrity, and respect. Their initiatives this year include improving the enforcement of vacation rental complaints, (where it's not preempted by the State) increasing neighbor education regarding waterway property compliance, and elevating the City of Fort Lauderdale neighborhoods together through engagement, innovation, and collaboration with our residents.

Please review the information below regarding common code violations, vacation rentals and enforcement reporting options. In addition to the resources listed, please do not hesitate to contact my office directly should you need our assistance.

This paragraph does not apply if the code inspector has reason to believe that the violation presents an imminent threat to public health, safety, or welfare or imminent destruction of habitat or sensitive resources.

Neighbor Support Night 2023

The District 2 Neighborhood Association presidents are an awesome group! That is why I am truly inspired after our quarterly Roundtable meetings. January 25th was no exception and I thank each and every one of them for their volunteerism, dedication, and involvement. Thank you as well to Susan Grant and Chris Cooper from Staff for spending time with us.

It was a pleasure attending the Central Beach Alliance (CBA) meeting on January 26th. There was a full agenda with a lot of valuable information for the large crowd in attendance. Thank you to CBA board and members for your constant dedication to the beach and the city at large.

January 28th was an absolutely thrilling day on Fort Lauderdale Beach as a tremendous crowd gathered for the Fort Lauderdale Aquatic Center Ribbon Cutting Ceremony and the International Swimming Hall of Fame Dive Challenge. The rebirth of this public facility will re-establish our City as the world’s swimming and diving capital. We were all bursting with civic pride!

On January 28th, 2023 the Human Rights Campaign (HRC) held its 2023 South Florida Dinner at the Fort Lauderdale Marriott Harbor Beach Resort & Spa. So proud to attend along with Mayor Dean Trantalis, Vice Mayor Warren Sturman, City Manager Greg Chavarria, and Staff to show our support for equality and to stand up in the face of LGBTQ+ discrimination. Fort Lauderdale consistently receives a perfect score of 100% from HRC because we are an inclusive, diverse, and welcoming City and will not tolerate hate and bigotry.

The Paramount is a beautiful condominium on Fort Lauderdale Beach. The Social Committee gets together to discuss different topics and I was invited to join them last night in their Club Room to cover beach, District 2, and City issues. It was a pleasure- especially seeing old friends Janet Drobner and Diane Pincus Weinbrum and making new friends as well!
