January 2024 Newsletter:

Dear Neighbor,

At the January 9th Commission Meeting, my colleagues and I were updated on recent steps taken to address homelessness in the city along with planned efforts moving forward. Homelessness is one of the top priorities of the Commission, with a focus on addressing the congregation at intersections, coordinating services to access mental/physical health and substance abuse resources, improving safety for our neighbors, and housing affordability.

Currently, roughly 48% of Broward County’s unsheltered homeless population is within the City of Fort Lauderdale. In 2023, the Police Department and Fire Rescue combined responded to more than 11,200 calls related to homelessness. The City provides a wide range of services for the homeless population including the Housing Navigation Program, which achieved a 65% success rate for a group of 43 chronically homeless individuals. The General Fund currently budgets approximately $1.8 Million towards homeless related efforts and the City administers grant funds totaling approximately $12.2 million towards homelessness related initiatives for a total of $14 million for FY 2024. Efforts to coordinate with the county and state are ongoing.

I am very proud that in May of 2023 we created a Homeless Advisory Committee. This committee is comprised of seven individuals that are residents, subject matter experts and business owners throughout the City. The purpose of the Homeless Advisory Committee is to advise the City Commission on the creation and implementation for a strategic plan to prevent, reduce and address homelessness, assist in identifying funding for homeless initiatives, review best practices in addressing homelessness, help raise awareness regarding the City’s actions in addressing homelessness and determine any gaps in programs that address homelessness and develop performance indicators.

My appointment on this committee, Paula Yukna, has first-hand experience with the homeless population and shortly after her appointment, she was selected as Chair of the committee by her peers. She volunteers at an organization called Ruth Ministries, located at the United Church of Christ Fort Lauderdale (2501 NE 30th Street). Every Thursday, Paula and a team of 20-30 volunteers help upwards of 150+ people receive a delicious meal, clothing, shoes and other essentials. I could not think of a more qualified individual to serve on this committee, and I thank her for accepting the role. The challenge of homelessness will not be solved overnight. Balancing the complex needs of individuals experiencing homelessness with the impact on city residents is not easy. I am proud to be a part of a city that has allocated generous funding, created countless initiatives and recently formed a committee of Fort Lauderdale residents to help us come together and find workable solutions to mitigate this ongoing concern.

You Must Re-Apply to Vote by Mail

Due to a change in state law, Florida Voters who wish to receive a Vote-by-Mail ballot for 2023 through 2024 elections are required to complete a new Vote-by-Mail ballot request.

In 2021, Florida legislators passed a new law that changed the basic rule for mail-in ballots. Previously, a Florida voter's request for a mail-in ballot would be good for two general election cycles, meaning a new request would not be needed for four years. The new law reduces that duration to once per general election cycle, or every two years. As a result, every vote-by-mail request expired at the end of 2022.

To renew your Vote-by-Mail request, in Broward, click on this link: Mail Ballot Request Service.
