January 2025 Newsletter

Dear Neighbor,

On January 21st, the City held its annual Prioritization Workshop and outlined our District and City-wide goals and priorities for Fiscal Year 2026. As in past years, staff will compile the feedback, group the ideas into categories, and present a draft of the City Commission Priorities for consideration at a February Conference meeting.

The FY 2026 City Commission priorities discussed include:

·      Public Safety

·      Homeless Initiatives

·      Affordable Housing and Economic Development

·      Transportation and Traffic

·      Infrastructure and Resilience

·      Public Spaces and Community Initiatives

I have shared all back-up material below, along with an informative video detailing how the City Commission prioritizes its goals and coordinates all strategic planning.

Once again, I want to thank all of the District 2 neighborhoods for their input prior to our goal setting workshop; our District 2 neighborhood presidents have related how the city goals apply to their specific residents. My office has taken notes, and we will begin working on those priorities immediately. That feedback will help us forge ahead, making 2025 yet another impactful year!

This video demonstrates Goal Setting and Strategic Planning as well as City accomplishments.

Workshop agenda and backup

I had the honor of presenting a Proclamation declaring January 27, 2025, as International Holocaust Remembrance Day in the City of Fort Lauderdale.

Accepting were Evan Goldman, Public Affairs Director for the Jewish Federation of Broward County and his son Max. In our nation and around the world, we are witnessing a deeply troubling rise in antisemitism; let me quote young Max’s brief remarks at the podium: “Never again!”

War Memorial's Transformation

The iconic War Memorial Auditorium in Holiday Park has reopened after a $65 million renovation, transforming it into Fort Lauderdale’s premier mid-sized music and entertainment venue. Originally built in 1950 to honor veterans, the Art Deco-style building now boasts a sleek, modern interior with a new mezzanine level, VIP seating, state-of-the-art technology, and an industrial kitchen for catered events.

Managed by the Florida Panthers, the venue has already hosted Melissa Etheridge and is set to welcome acts like The Wallows and The Driver Era as part of its Grand Opening Series. Connected to the Baptist Health IcePlex, War Memorial Auditorium has transformed into a one-of-a-kind entertainment hub for South Florida.

What Businesses Need to Know

Fortify Lauderdale is a citywide initiative focused on improving resilience to the impacts of climate change within the City’s most vulnerable neighborhoods and communities. The program includes an expansion of the first phase of Stormwater Master Plan projects, as well as the acceleration of the second phase of the Master Plan’s implementation.

As part of the second phase of the Master Plan's implementation, a Flood Survey has been developed to gather valuable input from residents and collect documentation of neighborhood flooding.

Please take a moment to fill out a Flood Survey using this link, or the below QR code, to describe recent and/or historical flooding events.

The City of Fort Lauderdale's NW 7th Avenue is The Avenue of the Arts. For many years, other than the Broward Center for the Performing Arts at the south end of the street, one would wonder where the arts are. Well, in its third year, The AOTA - Avenue Of The Arts Visual Arts Festival has brought artists from around the world to create more than 100 murals on the avenue and side streets. There is now connectivity to the Thrive Art District as well. Congratulations to Maxence Doytier and the entire team.

I read Florida Trend magazine because it does a deep dive each month into everything business and economic development-related in the entire state. I particularly enjoyed the January issue and want to congratulate the Greater Fort Lauderdale Alliance and Visit Fort Lauderdale for the excellent job in promoting our community! Shout out also to Director and Chief Curator of the NSU Art Museum, Bonnie Clearwater, for her feature and always elevating the status of arts and culture.

Forty-nine degrees did not get in the way of me joining the Broward Workshop’s Urban Corridor Committee Meeting. This business organization established in 1981 represents 100 of Broward County’s major businesses and professions. I thoroughly enjoyed presenting to them the City of Fort Lauderdale's priorities and initiatives and how we are moving our city forward in 2025. I am so grateful for their work on a myriad of issues and greatly appreciate the invitation to join them. Great dialogue and thank goodness there was hot coffee!

Always a pleasure to attend a neighborhood meeting and speak with members of the Central Beach Alliance (CBA). Another great turnout and thank you to City Staff for presenting the great work you do.
