March 2025 Newsletter: 3/24/2025

Dear Neighbor,

And the Budget Process Begins Again!

Although we just finalized our 2025 Budget a few months ago, the process now begins again. The annual budget is the strongest statement of the City’s priorities for the coming year. As such, it is critical that the community is involved.

At the Tuesday, March 4th Commission meeting, City Staff’s presentation on public engagement in the budget process detailed the overview of the budget calendar, followed by a breakdown of opportunities for public engagement at various stages. I am very grateful to staff for this presentation because it is so important that neighbors understand the timing required to get public feedback incorporated into the decision-making. The time is now!

This year, we adopt our Budget on September 12th, 2025. The presentation below is a wonderful tool to help our residents gage where we are in the cycle and how they can make their voices heard. Please observe the key dates and meeting times that are listed for public involvement in the presentation below. Meaningful public input can help residents understand the hard choices that budgeting entails and assist elected officials in better understanding the programs and services the residents value the most.

I am VERY fortunate to represent a district that constantly gives me suggestions and requests regarding the City’s budget all year long. I am hoping this additional overview of the process enhances your voice and ensures that it is heard.

There is a lot of pressure these days on public education. The City of Fort Lauderdale stands firmly behind our schools and each day works to ensure that our children are safe and have the opportunity and tools to be all they can be. On a quarterly basis, the Fort Lauderdale school principals gather at FXE to learn what is happening in our great City. It was my pleasure to welcome everyone and to let them know how much we appreciate their work.

“Tikkun olam” is a Hebrew phrase meaning “repair/heal the world”; it is a core concept in Judaism that emphasizes this responsibility through social action and the pursuit of justice. I had the honor of presenting a proclamation honoring Pearl and Stanley Goodman for their incredible philanthropy during their 63 years in the City of Fort Lauderdale. Thank you Goodman JFS of Broward County for all you do to assist those in need.

I was honored to present a proclamation recognizing Fort Lauderdale High School Flying L's Drumline. They consistently bring unmatched energy, thrilling audiences and igniting school spirit with electrifying performances that inspire peers, uplift the community and showcase an extraordinary commitment to excellence. Congratulations to all; we are so proud of this District 2 High School!

On a gorgeous Sunday with a spectacular setting, I had the opportunity to address the annual meeting of the Hendricks Isle & Venice Isle Neighborhood Association. Thank you to Staff for taking the time to join me and engage with the membership. Excellent updates and great questions from the residents.

The Human Rights Campaign held its 2025 South Florida Dinner at the fabulous Fort Lauderdale Marriott Harbor Beach Resort & Spa. So proud to attend along with Mayor Dean Trantalis, Police Chief Bill Schultz, and Staff to show our support for equality and to stand up in the face of LGBTQ+ discrimination. The City of Fort Lauderdale consistently receives a perfect score of 100% from HRC because we are an inclusive, diverse, and welcoming City and will not tolerate hate and bigotry.
