November 2023 Newsletter

Dear Neighbor,

It’s hard to believe that the holidays are upon us! While typically a time of joy and love, this year’s celebration is bittersweet. On one hand, we have so much to be thankful for and we want to share good times with each other; on the other hand, we witness so much hate and division in our nation and the world. Because Fort Lauderdale is a welcoming, diverse and inclusive city, we will gather to spread light over darkness. While these days are difficult, we must choose love and peace and be the example for others to emulate.

The City has begun the “Light Up the Holiday” events in District 2, downtown and on the beach. On Thursday, November 9th, the City kicked off the light up series with “Light up Lauderdale” in Esplanade Park. The following night, we had “Light Up the Beach” in Las Olas Oceanside Park (LOOP) for another fun-filled night and also for a sneak preview of the Rink at Wonderland.

What great crowds and terrific entertainment on both nights! Thank you, Riverwalk, the amazing Parks and Recreation staff and, of course, the residents who make these events so incredibly special.

There is still plenty of time to share the Fort Lauderdale holiday spirit as we have four remaining “Light Up” events to go! We wish you a wondrous season that began with Thanksgiving and extends into Hanukkah, Christmas, and Kwanzaa. Please be safe, be kind and be neighborly.

You Must Re-Apply to Vote by Mail

Due to a change in state law, Florida Voters who wish to receive a Vote-by-Mail ballot for 2023 through 2024 elections are required to complete a new Vote-by-Mail ballot request.

In 2021, Florida legislators passed a new law that changed the basic rule for mail-in ballots. Previously, a Florida voter's request for a mail-in ballot would be good for two general election cycles, meaning a new request would not be needed for four years. The new law reduces that duration to once per general election cycle, or every two years. As a result, every vote-by-mail request expired at the end of 2022.

To renew your Vote-by-Mail request, in Broward, click on this link: Mail Ballot Request Service.
