November 2024 Newsletter

Dear Neighbor,

What an INCREDIBLE year this has been! This time of year, I always look back and reflect on the amazing strides we have made-but for this newsletter, I want to pause and just appreciate the moment. On November 18th, we celebrated “Light up the Beach”, with UNDOUBTABLY the biggest crowd we have ever seen.

Our neighbors from all parts of the city were so joyous and the good energy was palpable. I am so incredibly thankful to the you, the District 2 residents, for choosing me to serve another four years. Your continual feedback, suggestions, and support are such a huge contributing factor on why this District is so special. In partnership with every neighborhood, we will reach even greater heights in the next four years. Happy Thanksgiving and let the Holiday Season begin!

Enjoy the love of friends and family,

Steven

Pilot Program Launched to Help Condo Associations

We’re excited to share a new initiative from the Florida Department of Financial Services that could potentially benefit Fort Lauderdale and other Florida condominium associations: My Safe Florida Condo.

Modeled after My Safe Florida Home, My Safe Florida Condo is a pilot program approved during the 2024 legislative session. It offers condo associations assistance to help strengthen condominiums against hurricane winds. The program has $30 million in funding for this initial pilot phase.

My Safe Florida Condo eligibility requirements & details:

·    Condo association must be within 15 miles of the coastline and receive a majority vote from their board to be eligible to apply

·    Eligible associations can potentially receive a free mitigation inspection and a reimbursement grant up to $175,000 per association for wind-mitigation improvements

·    Mitigation improvements can include stronger roofs, exterior and garage doors, windows, skylights, and other wind-resistance improvements

·    Wind insurance premium savings are also possible with program eligibility

The pilot phase has limited resources, and condo associations in the City of Fort Lauderdale are encouraged to apply promptly. Applications and full program details are available at mysafeflcondo.com, including the full Florida Statute on the program, and more.

Additionally, condo associations and residents can also find more information about new laws related to condo reserves, transparency, and accountability at the Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation (DBPR) by visiting: condos.myfloridalicense.com, for resources in both English and Spanish.

We encourage you to share this opportunity with eligible condominium associations in your community to help strengthen their hurricane resilience.

The City of Fort Lauderdale has some exciting news! This past fall, the City launched a new business development program called StartUp FTL Innovate & Elevate! In partnership with Kauffman FastTrac, the program is designed to equip early-staged business owners and entrepreneurs with the necessary skills and knowledge that is vital for the sustainable growth of their business idea or establishment. Through a set of 10-weeks, participants will learn from 5 different modules presented by the FastTrac curriculum. Participants will gain insights from local, business experts as well as from local business resources to be able to implement into their business.

On October 24, 2024, StartUp FTLL concluded its first cohort of 13 participants. Starting November 11, 2024, StartUp FTL will be opening applications for the January 2025 cohort! The program, offered by the City of Fort Lauderdale, will be at no cost to the participant. The program will feature a hybrid schedule to ensure flexibility for both in-person and digital collaboration. Participants are required to submit an application and must be a resident in the City of Fort Lauderdale or are willing to open a business in the City of Fort Lauderdale.

The program will be accepting applications starting on Monday, November 11, 2024. The program will select a cohort of up to 15 participants. Selected participants will be notified in January 2025 after the holidays.

Interested applicants can see the recorded informational session to learn more on how to apply and what to expect from the program. The recorded session can be found on the program’s website or here – StartUp FTL Informational Session. For questions regarding the program, please contact the program coordinator, Melissa Mata at MMata@fortlauderdale.gov, (954) 828-6182.

Cornucopia of Praise at Riverwalk!

November 29th, 2024

For the past 23 years, the John and Elizabeth’s Toy Drive has been more than a tradition; it’s been my life’s work and a legacy I shared with my late husband, John Weaver, to bring joy to children who need it most. Thanks to your generosity, we’ve been able to create countless moments of hope and happiness for these children.

This year, we’re doing things a little differently. Instead of our usual in-person Toy Drive party, we’re teaming up with our charity partner, the Fort Lauderdale Black Police Officers Association (FLBPOA), to host a “Toy Drive & Fundraiser Non-Event”! Without our traditional Toy Drive party, we’re counting on friends like you to help us reach our goal of providing toys to 4,000 children in Broward County.

District 2’s holiday celebrations kicked off on the 18th with a fabulous “Light Up the Beach!” and the Nurmi Isles was our first neighborhood association to hold its holiday cheer! These three finger streets off Las Olas Boulevard know how to throw a party! Great turnout, amazing weather, and hosts Harry and Larry could not have been more gracious. A good time was had by all!

As a former teacher, I am thrilled when we recognize the achievements of our City’s students. How precious these children are and to even see a pre-K student included was simply wonderful!

Dillard Innovation Zone Student Recognition. Congratulations to these students: Jace Brinson, Philippe Dominique, Armani Ponticello, Quanteria Dowling, Gavin Reynolds, Hector Gonzalez, Isaiah Champagne, & Josias Belizaire.
