October 2023 Newsletter

Dear Neighbor,

On October 3rd, the City Commission voted to approve a comprehensive agreement with Hall of Fame Partners LLC, for a project that includes the construction, maintenance, and operation of east and west buildings at the International Swimming Hall of Fame/Aquatics Center, located at 501 Seabreeze Boulevard. The comprehensive agreement is a framework that allows the City to move the project through the site plan approval process, getting valuable public input in the months ahead.

The new International Swimming Hall of Fame will complement the award-winning Aquatics Center and bookend the peninsula in stunning fashion. Fort Lauderdale’s Aquatic Center, which boasts one of the highest diving platforms in the world at 89 feet, has already undergone a successful $50 million renovation, reopening to a great reception one year ago.

This $190 million makeover of the International Hall of Fame will be a major attraction for visitors and all those who enjoy aquatic sports. This project will transform the city-owned peninsula south of Las Olas with a modern five-story building on the east side, just a block from the beach, and a six-story building on the west, overlooking the Intracoastal Waterway.

Features of the new East building will include a FlowRider surf simulator, shops, and office space. Visitors will be able to enjoy a beautiful café that serves lunch and dinner and becomes a bar in the evening.

The West building will feature an aquarium and house the International Swimming Hall of Fame Museum, where visitors will be able to travel through time to enjoy an expansive display of aquatic sports history. There, visitors will also be able to enjoy an upscale rooftop restaurant and a teaching pool. In addition, there will be a dry land training facility for divers, two floors of parking with 304 spaces, more office space, and a promenade.

The developer, CGHP Developments, a partnership between Capital Group and Hensel Phelps, also plans to build an Ocean Rescue headquarters for the city’s lifeguards as well as seawall improvements to protect the 5-acre peninsula against sea level rise.

This renovation will return Fort Lauderdale to the top of the aquatics' world. The approval of this project represents a rebirth of the International Swimming Hall of Fame, and its best is yet to come.

The Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show is coming tomorrow, October 25–29, 2023.

The largest in-water boat show in the world returns to Fort Lauderdale for the 64th year on Wednesday, October 25. With more than 100,000 attendees expected, you can expect heavy traffic on and around the barrier island.

The event takes place from October 25-29. Anyone planning to attend the boat or show or visit the beach should consider alternative transportation options to get there. For a host of parking and transportation options, please visit the FLIBS website.

There is one road closure associated with the event -- SE 5th Street between Seabreeze Boulevard and North A1A. SE 5th Street will serve as a bus stop location specifically created for the boat show, and the route runs from SE 5th Street to the Broward County Convention Center. Patrons are encouraged to use the Broward County Convention Center parking garages to attend the event. From the convention center, attendees can use either the bus system or the Water Taxi to visit the two other locations for the show.

The downtown parking garages and the parking garage at the Galleria Mall are also designated parking locations for patrons of the event to park and ride the Water Taxi. Additionally, four locations have been designated for pick-up/drop-off for rideshare companies. These locations are close to the event’s main entrance and will allow vehicles to move off the roadway and not block the lanes of traffic.

You Must Re-Apply to Vote by Mail

Due to a change in state law, Florida Voters who wish to receive a Vote-by-Mail ballot for 2023 through 2024 elections are required to complete a new Vote-by-Mail ballot request.

In 2021, Florida legislators passed a new law that changed the basic rule for mail-in ballots. Previously, a Florida voter's request for a mail-in ballot would be good for two general election cycles, meaning a new request would not be needed for four years. The new law reduces that duration to once per general election cycle, or every two years. As a result, every vote-by-mail request expired at the end of 2022.

To renew your Vote-by-Mail request, in Broward, click on this link: Mail Ballot Request Service.

King Tides and High Tides in Our Community

With seven miles of shoreline; 300 miles of waterway coastline; a flat topography; and shallow, porous aquifer, Fort Lauderdale is vulnerable to the effects of climate change and sea level rise. Flooding in low-lying areas is more likely when the close proximity of the moon, higher than average tides called king tides, rising sea levels, and inclement weather conditions combine to exacerbate flooding risks. Rainfall and wind strength and direction can have a significant impact on the height of the tides causing them to come in higher or lower than predicted. Also note that high water tables (groundwater level) due to rain events can raise the probability of localized flooding.

Predicted 2023 King Tides

Each year, the City of Fort Lauderdale reviews the National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration's (NOAA) predicted tide elevations. This year, king tides are predicted on at least 28 days. While these dates reflect the current prediction for seasonal higher tides, greater than average tides can occur anytime of the year under varying conditions.
