Department of Art Faculty Exhibition and Reception  Scheduled at Claflin University

A reception at Claflin University on Thursday, Feb. 13, in the Arthur Rose Museum will introduce faculty/artists participating in the annual Department of  Art   Faculty  Exhibition. The Department of Art will host the reception which is set for 5-7 p.m.  Admission is free and the public is invited. 

The exhibition will feature more than 50 paintings, sculptures, and other visual art pieces in the museum through February 28.  Cornelius Cakley Rashid Glover, David Howell, Herman Keith Jr., Tabitha Ott, Ricardo Quinonez, Habibur Rahman, Mia Ulmer and Patro Ulmer are the contributing faculty/artists.

The Department of Art Faculty Lecture Series is  also  being held in conjunction with the exhibition. Presenters will discuss various works from their careers, current research, conceptual explorations, artistic and creative processes, and other topics.

CIAA Tournament Tickets Now On Sale

The Claflin University Panthers will participate in the CIAA Basketball Tournament on February 25-29, 2020, at the Bojangles Coliseum and Spectrum Center in Charlotte, N.C. The tournament is widely-acclaimed as one of the nation's top sports, cultural, and entertainment attractions. Men's and women's basketball teams representing all 12-member institutions will compete for the tournament title and a berth to the NCAA Division II Championships. Let's cheer the Panthers on to a CIAA Tournament Championship!
 
Tickets are on sale now on Monday-Friday from 8:30 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. at the Claflin University cashier's window on the 2nd Floor of Tingley Hall.  Available ticket packages for the tournament are as follows:  General Admission - $200 each.

Student Spotlight - Wes Guyton

Wes Guyton, a sophomore business administration major, has been offered a summer intern position with Boeing as a business operations intern.  Boeing is the world's largest aerospace company and leading manufacturer of commercial jetliners and defense, space and security systems continuing to bring in the best talent.  In their Business Intern Program, he will be part of a team that is helping shape the future of aerospace. Throughout the 10-12 week program, he will work on innovative projects with a global reach in areas such as finance, supply chain management, business operations, facilities and asset management, human resources, global trade controls, sales and marketing and communications. The Boeing intern experience will also go beyond his assigned job with site tours, community involvement, exposure to Boeing executives, networking events and seminars.
Claflin to Host 14th Annual First Lady's Hats and Gloves Scholarship Tea


Claflin University is hosting the 14th Annual First Lady's Hats & Gloves Scholarship Tea on March 17, at 6 p.m. in the Tullis Arena at the Jonas T. Kennedy Health and Wellness Complex. This special event is held each year during Women's History Month and all proceeds benefit the First Lady's Hats and Gloves Tea Endowed Scholarship. The scholarship fund is designated for academically gifted and exceptionally talented students matriculating at Claflin.  
 
Themed "Valiant Women of the Vote," this year's event will honor former Senator Maggie W. Glover and former Representative Lucille S. Whipper.
 
Three $2,000 scholarships will be awarded at the event to three Claflin students based on need and academic success. The scholarship application and essay deadline is Thursday, February 27.

The Aiken-Barnwell Genealogical Society and the Aiken County Historical Museum hosted an opening program of "Salley and The Thompson Family Historical Exhibit" on Saturday, February  1, at the Aiken County Historical Museum in Aiken, S.C. Adjunct faculty Dr. Walter B. Curry, Jr., serves as guest curator and founder of Renaissance Genealogy & Publications, LLC. The exhibit is open until April 23 and features stories from Dr. Curry's book, The Thompson Family: Untold Stories from the Past (1830-1960).

Elizabeth Humphrey, '05, a seventh grade science teacher at Howard Middle School and former 2018-2019 District Teacher of the Year  has been selected to attend the 2019-2020 Women's Minority Leadership Seminar in Orlando, FL, sponsored by the NEA. The 2019-2020 Minority Leadership and Women's Leadership Training Seminar prepares early career educators and emerging leaders to be powerful advocates for their students, their profession, and their Association.

Claflin Men's Basketball to Face Johnson C. Smith on Aspire TV Saturday

The Claflin University men's basketball team will make its inaugural television appearance as a member of the CIAA.  The Panthers will face off against the Golden Bulls of Johnson C. Smith University as part of the CIAA Television Package and will air on Aspire Television on Saturday, February 8 at 3:30 p.m.

Claflin to Face North Georgia in First-Ever Peach Belt Conference Series

The Claflin University baseball team will get their first taste of competition in the Peach Belt Conference this weekend when the Panthers travel to the University of North Georgia for a three-game series. The Panthers played as independents last season and played in the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC), where they won the 2016 title, for the previous 10 years.
 
The conference series-opener for both teams gets underway Friday, February 7, at 4 p.m. followed by games on Saturday and Sunday with starting times of 1 p.m. and 12 noon, respectively. All games will be played at the Bob Stein Stadium in Dahlonega, Ga.
