The World Needs Visionaries
Most colleges and University administrators covet high graduation rates and view them as indicators that help determine the value and worth of their academic programs. Graduation rates may also influence the decisions prospective students make about what colleges or universities are the best investments of their time and resources.

Claflin University’s commitment to academic excellence and lowering student debt was reaffirmed by a U.S. News and World Report Short List ranking that placed Claflin third among 10 HBCUs with the highest four-year graduation rates among first-time, full-time students who started in fall 2014.

“This is by far the most powerful and impactful of our impressive rankings,” Claflin President Dr. Dwaun J. Warmack said. “This ranking is consistent with our Value Proposition that includes providing affordable and exceptional educational experiences while maintaining higher student retention rates and shorter time for degree completion than the national average. This is what matters most to our students, parents, and stakeholders.”

According to U.S. News, The Short List is separate from the publication's overall rankings. It is a regular series that magnifies individual data points in hopes of providing students and parents a way to find which undergraduate or graduate programs excel or have room to grow in specific areas.

U.S. News surveyed more than 1,850 colleges and universities for its 2021 survey of undergraduate programs. These schools self-reported myriad data regarding their academic programs and the makeup of their student body, among other areas. U.S. News also stated that this data is the most accurate and detailed collection of college facts and figures of its kind.

U.S. News and World Report previously ranked Claflin in the “Top 10” on its list of the Best Historically Black Colleges/Universities (HBCUs) for the 11th consecutive year.

Claflin is the only HBCU in South Carolina ranked in the “Top 10” of both categories.

The prestigious publication also ranked Claflin seventh in the Best Regional Colleges in the South category and third among the Top Performers on Social Mobility for Regional Colleges in the South.
Claflin University Panther Pantry Expands with New Sponsorship from KPMG
by Daa'iyah Fogle, student writer
The Claflin University Office of Career Development recently bridged a sponsorship with Klynveld Peat Marwick Goerdeler (KPMG) to receive non-perishable food donations for the University’s Panther Pantry. The items are scheduled to be delivered this month.

As part of the KPMG Accelerate 2025 Initiative, the firm partnered with Pack Shack in Arkansas to combat the epidemic of food insecurity on HBCU campuses. Under KPMG’s Feed Your Mind Initiative, Claflin University will receive 66 Be Neighborly Provision boxes, each containing 30 essential food items such as peanut butter, jelly, pasta sauce, rice, beans, canned chicken, canned tuna, and snacks.

According to Carolyn Snell, assistant to the vice president for student development and services and director of career development, the Panther Pantry serves a dual purpose on Claflin’s campus. It supports the University’s regular meal plan by offering students the opportunity to receive food outside traditional dining hours, as well as a place for students to come and receive free food.

“This opportunity means a lot to us, but it means more to the students. If they’re able to come to the pantry and pick out items that we have stocked, then it aids in them not having to go out and spend money on fast food, especially at night,” said Snell.

“As a freshman, I do not have access to a car on campus so, unlike many students, I am not able to go get food whenever I want. I found myself being hungry in-between cafe hours and not having easy access to snacks. It’s nice that I not only get to work the Pantry, but I also get to use it as a resource to get food for my room,” said Jayla Bryant, Panther Pantry volunteer and student ambassador with the Claflin University Office of Career Development.

The Panther Pantry launched in 2020 but grew tremendously in 2021 with sponsorship from various organizations. Every Tuesday and Thursday from 11 a.m. – 3 p.m. Claflin students can stop by the Pantry centrally located on campus to pick up non-perishable food items.

“Right now, we have three sponsors- Food Lion Feeds, Educational Credit Management Corporation (ECMC), and now KPMG,” said Snell.  “Our goal is to continue to have a relationship with our current sponsors while looking to build relationships with new sponsors so we can keep the Pantry open and vital for the student body.”
