NH Ice Cream Trail

Updates

The growing season is in full swing in our region -- and our produce department is reflecting that: spinach and radishes from Picadilly Farm, strawberries and lettuce from Harlow Farm, mixed greens from Bethel Farm and herbs from Tracie's Community Farm and Fertile Field Farm.  Our mix of locally grown offerings will grow throughout the summer.

In addition to bringing more local food to our shelves, we're offering more events centered on our local food system.  This month's Farm Tour at Mayfair Farm attracted over 70 people (thanks Craig & Sarah!) and we look forward to our tour of Harlow Farm in July.

June is National Dairy Month and we're celebrating with our Ice Cream Social Fundraiser this Saturday.  Come enjoy Walpole Creamery ice cream, a medley of delicious toppings and bluegrass music from the LeClaires. This year, we're raising funds for the Monadnock Localvores Jeffrey P. Smith Farm Scholarship Program.  See more details below.

Celebrating the summer continues with our Local Foods BBQs in July and August featuring locally grown and made food and music.  We hope you all can join us!

Yours Cooperatively,

Michael Faber

Democracy in Action:
Co-op Board Nomination Period Open

The Monadnock Food Co-op Board of Directors seeks candidates for this year's election.  Three board seats are open for election every year. The board of directors monitors the operations of the co-op on behalf of its members. The board meets once a month for two hours and board members normally commit to serve on an internal board committee as well. Please read more details below.

To be a director, you must be a Monadnock Food Co-op member-owner. Directors elected in 2014 will serve three-year terms ending in 2017. The Board Nominating Committee oversees the slate of candidates, and there are two ways you can run for the board:

1.  Nomination through the Board Nominating Committee
You can nominate yourself by submitting your name to the Board Nominating Committee via Joe marks, board president, at joe@baudelairesoaps.com. Potential candidates will be asked to submit a statement of interest and qualifications. Nominations are due by August 15, 2014.  The Board Nominating Committee will then review all candidates and create a slate of nominees at their discretion.

2.  Nomination by Petition
If you would like to run by petition, you are required to collect the signatures of at least 50 other member-owners in good standing and submit your petition to the Nominations Committee. Candidates running by petition will be required to fill out an application packet and submit a digital photo. Informational interviews with the Nominations Committee are not required but are strongly suggested, and are available by appointment. Candidates may not submit petitions on behalf of another member-owner but only for themselves. Signed petitions are due by September 15, 2014.

Worker Cooperatives:
Pathways to Scale
From the Democracy Collaborative, By Hilary Abell

Public interest in cooperatives has surged since the global financial crisis, as people cry out for an alternative to business-as-usual. In spite of their many benefits for individuals, businesses, and society, however, cooperatives are not well understood in the United States. The field of worker co-op development is just beginning to create the infrastructure and knowledge base needed to increase its scale and impact.

Who Wants to Grab a Cold One?
By Mary Veerkamp, Monadnock Food Co-op

Ah, it feels like winter may have finally left New England for its annual trek to the southern hemisphere. Warm sunny days, grilled food and an occasional adult beverage are high on my list of favorite things as we move into summer.

As I've mentioned in previous posts, I'm a pretty conscientious eater (though my family might have a different term for it!), so shopping for healthy items to grill is second nature to me now. Alas, the same is not always true for adult beverages, beer in particular. Because beer is not subject to the same labeling requirements as food, there may be all kinds of icky (yes, that IS a technical term) ingredients lurking in beer that you might want to avoid

There's good reason strawberry shortcake is a classic dessert. It's simple, yet amazingly delightful.
