Coaches Need Self-Reflection Too

Reflection is Self-Care

Even as students need a break and a breath following the close of a semester, so too do faculty and staff. For coaches, the end of semester crunch can bring multiple meetings featuring extra intensity, with students working to manage pressure and perform as well as they possibly can in their final exams, papers, and projects. It takes a great deal of energy to be present for students in these moments. Restoration is needed, and reflection is a useful restorative action.

Coaches, whether you have a true break from work or a slightly more open calendar in your full-time schedule, block out some time for yourself. Take that time to look back on your semester, and maybe your year, and reflect on your experiences. Remember that growth and learning are not linear, but unfold in rather a spiral shape, as you encounter situations and ideas again and again but each time with greater insight, new perspectives, and more experiences under your belt. Progress is not directly upward, but meandering; learning grows by fits and starts and is affected by the ups and downs of your personal and professional lives.

Consider questions like these (and perhaps journal your answers where you can read them later):

  • What do I know, or know more about, now than at this time a semester or year ago?
  • What moments showed me that I am making a difference for my coachees, and how?
  • When did I have difficult moments, and what did I learn from them?
  • If I have made a misstep or error this year, what happened? How have I, or can I, work to repair it and make positive change?
  • How can I track my progress so that I am aware of growth over time?
  • How can I stay reminded of ideas and tools that have become a part of my coaching capacity this year?

Keep the spiral of growth rising with a LifeBound training!

As you pause to reflect on the moments that shaped your coaching this semester, consider how continued growth might shape the next. LifeBound’s trainings are designed not just to teach techniques, but to deepen your mindset, expand your perspective, and help you show up for students with even more clarity and purpose.

Whether you choose the 3-Day Virtual Course or the flexible Self-Paced Training, you’ll be investing in your own development — and in the lasting success of those you coach.

Make 2025 the Year Coaching Solves Higher Ed’s Toughest Challenges

Higher education is grappling with unprecedented challenges—rising mental health crises, the need for greater career readiness, and the unfortunate reality that many students struggle to secure meaningful employment or are let go shortly after starting. These issues affect not only individual students but also university outcomes like enrollment, retention, and long-term institutional success.

By equipping your staff with coaching training, you can help students build resilience, achieve meaningful employment, and address many challenges that universities face today.  Allocate your budget toward LifeBound’s training options this year and plan ahead to ensure your institution is prepared to address these critical needs effectively.  Let’s create a campus-wide culture of coaching and make an impact in 2025!
