Collaborative Performance with James Sterling Pitt and Danny Paul Grody
Saturday, June 21, 4-7pm
Kala Gallery, 2290 San Pablo Avenue, Berkeley, CA 94702

In his studio practice, James Sterling Pitt records his experience of a time and place in a drawn sketch, and then converts it to sculpture referring to his personal memory of the experience. Over the course of his fellowship at Kala, Pitt has been working collaboratively with musician Danny Paul Grody. Together, they have recorded sound and image in both natural and constructed locations, including Mineral Springs in Tilden Park and Battery Townsley in the Marin Headlands. In addition to field recordings, they have documented spontaneous sounds made during Pitt's process of drawing, painting, and printmaking in his project space at Kala. The recordings they have made over this time have been reworked by each artist, built upon, and folded back into their collaborative work.

Open Seas, Call-for-entry Exhibition
Deadline: July 11, 2014 Fee (USD): $35.00

Kala Gallery announces Open Seas, a call for entries exhibition open to artists working in all media. Open Seas seeks work by artists who explore the idea of borders from a wide range of perspectives.

From political geography to psychological boundaries, the idea of borders can mean a line, an area, an arc, or a mark where something begins and something ends. When there is a border, a zone appears around this line. Inside the zone is like a chrysalis with a flexible shell. It is in constant flux and a transitional state. It expands on its own merging outside edges. Often it is an area where human desire and curiosity - desire to see what's not there and desire to change and transform, come to life and/or collapse constantly.

This exhibition asks artists to explore how borders -both atmospheric and conceptual-can be represented in a diverse range of media.

Application fee: $35 or join Friends of Kala Membership Program at the Artist/Student Level of $45, and new members waive the application fee, along with receiving all other membership benefits, including 10% off of workshops, classes and art purchases.

Drawing into Sculpture Workshop
Emma Spertus

Class #53: Saturdays, June 28 10am - 4pm

Class #54: Wednesdays, July 9, 16, 23 & 30, 6 - 9pm

Tuition Fee: $265

In Alain De Botton's book Art as Therapy, he theorizes that humans make Art to keep hope and remember, among other reasons. With the ever increasing threats to our natural environment, this class will focus on the wondrous beauty of things that grow in California, natively. By drawing from life, then translating the drawings into a letterpress print edition, students will be encouraged to re-focus on the essence of hope, and why we make things as humans. Through this topic exploration, students will learn the basics of photo polymer plate making, and leave the class with their personal set of one color, one sided, native to California Plant Prints.
