Congratulations to Department Scholars and Block Award Winners! |
Department Scholars
Milo Palmer – Music
Milo Palmer is the consummate musician. As a vocalist and bass player, he has been a member of Concert Choir, Vocal Jazz, Tenor Bass Ensemble, and Jazz Band, and has served as a section leader in most of these groups! As a musician he is always thoughtful and intellectually curious, truly wanting to understand how and why the music works. This year Milo made it to State Solo and Ensemble, and arranged a piece that the Tenor Bass Ensemble performed at the spring choir concert. Next year, he will attend Western Washington University to study music composition.
Ella Papineau – Theatre
Ella Papineau has been in every Ballard Playmakers show since she entered Ballard High School! This year, she played a leading role of Martha in The Secret Garden, and was a student director for the One Act Plays. She also served as president of our chapter of the International Thespian Society. In all of these shows, Ella’s energy, charisma, and vocal talent have shown her to be a true standout performer with an ability to connect with audiences that is rarely seen in a performer her age. Next year, she will attend Berklee College of Music to study songwriting and contemporary music performance.
Block Award Winners
Allied Arts Foundation is addressing the lack of high school recognition for artistic achievement by providing three awards in the arts to every Seattle public high school (45 awards total) each year. We produce The Robert J. Block Awards for Artistic Excellence to ensure that student artists are recognized at their schools’ year-end assemblies with the same honor and prestige given to athletes, academic achievers, and other student-body standouts.
Music – Q Adamson
Q is an incredibly talented percussionist. He has helped lead our drumline, played with our Wind Ensemble, played drumset for Jazz Band and Vocal Jazz, accompanied almost every choir on auxiliary percussion, and played extensively with School of Rock. In addition to percussion, Q has been a member of Concert Choir for the last few years where he sings Baritone, and has taken our school’s AP Music Theory class. He is an incredibly curious musician, always wanting to understand and learn more. Next year, Q will be pursuing percussion as a music student at Berklee College of Music in Boston.
Performing Arts/Theatre – Autumn Bailey
Autumn has been a dedicated theatre member throughout high school. She has been seen in numerous plays and musicals, including this year’s Burial at Thebes and The Secret Garden. She is a team player that always wants to help out. She’s been instrumental for our Saturday work calls, building sets, costumes, and designing hair and makeup. Autumn also serves as an officer on the board of our school’s International Thespian Society chapter.

Concert Uniforms - Turn them in! |
All concert uniforms should be turned in ASAP unless a student is performing at graduation. (Groups performing at graduation: Concert Choir, Advanced Chorale, Wind Ensemble, and selected percussionists.)
After graduation on 6/23, concert attire will be collected at Memorial Stadium. Students will be changing into their street clothes in the locker rooms at the end of graduation. Make sure to have all the pieces originally assigned (bow ties, necklaces, etc.) in the garment bag that evening. Families are responsible for the replacement cost of anything that is missing.

Stay Involved in Band this Summer — Join All City Band!
All City Band is a super fun summer band opportunity that focuses on marching band skills and performances at various parades throughout the area, including the Seafair Torchlight parade.
The All-City Band was started in 1951 as an answer to the question of how to have school programs represented in Seattle area summer celebrations when the schools are closed and the bands are not meeting. The band was started to fill this void and since then has served as the summer ambassador for school music programs.
The program typically runs for about 7 weeks. Rehearsals are typically Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday nights with performances most weekends. Highlights of the summer typically include the West Seattle Hi Yu Festival, Olympia Lakefair, and the Seafair Torchlight Parades.
Registration is $250 and students can receive service hours and/or half a fine arts credit (financial aid is available).

Chaperones Needed for Band Camp
As we near the end of the school year, we at BPAB are already getting excited for the coming year. We are excited to be starting the year with BAND CAMP Sept 8-10. Be sure to get the dates on your calendar now. As band is the first to head out to camp, we like to get our chaperones organized before summer starts.
For parents, it's a great way to meet fellow band parents and to get to know the great kids your child will get to hang out with for the year. It's fairly low key, a great chance to socialize, play some cards, hem some marching band uniforms, or sit by the lake and read a book. For details, see the SignUp Genius. Join us!
