"Spiritual Leadership for an Anxious Age" begins March 19

Clay Stauffer and Jay Hutchens are teaching a class on John Maxwell’s 21 Irrefutable Laws of Leadership that begins on Wednesday, March 19, at 6:15 PM in the boardroom.

Many questions will be explored in this Lenten series, including:

  • What is spiritual leadership?
  • How do we manage fear and anxiety?
  • What are the different levels of leadership?
  • How can Maxwell’s 21 laws be applied to the church?
  • Why does spiritual formation matter for Christian leaders?

This class is geared towards existing church leaders as well as anyone who wants to grow in these areas. Click the button below to RSVP so that we can prepare for you! Dinner registration is also available.

"Contemplative Enneagram for Lenten Reflection" begins tomorrow

Join Hunter Mobley and Vicki Askew for a contemplative Lenten journey as seen through the lens of the Enneagram tomorrow at 6:15 PM in Room 200. This series will include both an overview of the Enneagram and a deep dive into how each of the nine types view this season of reflection. Sessions will begin with a contemplative practice that speaks to the heart, mind, and body as we enter into this six-week study.

"Justified: The Book of Romans for Today" begins tomorrow

Rev. Justin Gung is beginning a class called "Justified: The Book of Romans for Today" tomorrow at 6:15 PM in Room 105.

The book of Romans is far too long, intricate, and complex to cover completely in a mere 5-session class. However, this class will endeavor to gain at least a foundational understanding of this towering work of theology and the good news contained therein. Join in, yet be warned! Theologian J.I. Packer writes, “When the message of Romans gets into a person’s heart, there’s no telling what may happen!”

All of these classes will run through Lent and finish on Wednesday, April 9. If you have any questions about any of these classes, contact Jay Hutchens at jayhutchens@woodmontcc.org

Living Forever

Lenten devotion by Rev. Claire E. Berry

Senior Minister of Woodmont from 1974-1979

“A shoot shall come out from the stock of Jesse, and a branch shall grow out of his roots. On that day the root of Jesse shall stand as a signal to the peoples; the nations shall inquire of him, and his dwelling shall be glorious.”

- Isaiah 11:1; 10

One of the oldest olive trees in the world is growing in the Garden of Gethsemane in Jerusalem. The roots are gnarled by the years and resemble bony knees jutting up at the base of the tree. It is said that if you carefully water and fertilize an olive tree, it may live for 200 years. But, if you let it grow naturally, receiving only the nourishment nature provides, it will live forever. Each time a part of it dies, new branches and shoots spring from the roots. Maybe Isaiah had this in mind.

Jesus, this branch from the stump of Jesse, was cut down by cruel, selfish hands. Perhaps in the Garden of Gethsemane, he knelt by the olive tree and remembered the words of Isaiah as he contemplated his coming death.

Like the olive tree, eternity was in his roots, and death could not hold him. Easter burst forth with life, and death was vanquished forever. By faith, we have been grafted into his root and branch, and we, too, shall live as the olive tree.

World Stage

by Michael Graham

What do participants at Wimbledon, the Masters tournament, and concert pianists all have in common? At least two things– they have all had private instruction and have all practiced what their masters taught. Even with God-given talent and a passion to match, one can only go so far with class instruction. There are nuances and experiential knowledge that are passed down from a mentor to a student that can only be realized in a one-on-one setting.

Jesus gave His disciples three years of group instruction. Nearing the end, He told them that, though He was going away, He would send each of them a "Helper," One who would "be in them" and "teach them all things." Jesus kept that promise, for once He returned to heaven, though the disciples were eventually separated for service, they were never alone. They had a Mentor by their side and in them – 24-7.

The classrooms of church programs, even worship itself, although vital in our spiritual formation, can only take us so far in attaining a pinnacle of spirituality. There is a power that comes only from "abiding in Him." The Holy Spirit helps us fulfill the commandment to love one another. His power is expressed daily in our lives as we study God's word, obey it, and live in daily contact with the Master.

When Clay encourages us, as he does quite often, to read God's word and pray, he is sharing an essential, necessary challenge. God is as personal as we allow Him to be once we are abiding and obeying. If we want to "go for the gold" on the world stage of following Jesus, we can. God has not only bid us to do so, He has gifted us the necessary instruction through His word and provided each of us with a personal Trainer. Praise and thanks be to God!
