Vermont to Cover SNAP Benefits for Two Weeks Amid Federal Shutdown
With the federal shutdown halting SNAP payments, Vermont will spend $6.3 million to cover 3SquaresVT benefits for 15 days starting November 1. About one in ten Vermonters rely on the program. Governor Phil Scott called the move a short-term fix, saying the state can manage “weeks, not months.” The Emergency Board also approved $250,000 for the Vermont Foodbank to meet rising demand. Woodstock Says: "That’s a Lot of Lattes"
Foliage season commerce hit record highs this year in Woodstock, where even the espresso machines struggled to keep up. At Dreamscape Café, co-owner James Williams went through 50 gallons of milk a day as crowds of leaf-peepers descended on the village. Longtime shopkeepers and new arrivals alike reported the busiest autumn in memory, a welcome fall respite after a slow-tourism summer. (Via VTStandard)

Green Mountain Job Retention Program Celebrates Year 3
Vermont is serious about keeping its graduates local — and it has the loan repayments to prove it. The Green Mountain Job Retention Program just cut $845,000 in stipends to 169 recent grads who stayed in-state for two years, with a new cohort now accepting applications through December 1. $5,000 toward student loans may not buy a farmhouse in Woodstock, but it's enough for some to stick around.
