In a concerted effort to get more students involved in the local trade industry, over 100 high school students from Honolulu Community College’s Summer CTE Academy visited the Pacific Fleet Submarine Museum earlier this month to wrap up their five-week summer program.

The students had the opportunity to meet with Pearl Harbor Naval Shipyard officials and other organizations to learn about potential trade career opportunities and took part in hands-on career activities.

Collections Spotlight: Frank Joseph Unger

From rigging sails aboard the USS Constellation in 1911 to witnessing the dawn of nuclear-powered submarines after World War II, Chief Torpedoman Frank Joseph Unger’s 40-year naval career spanned one of the most transformative eras in naval history.

Unger served in both World War I and World War II and was stationed aboard some of the U.S. Navy’s earliest submarines, including the C-1 (SS-9) and the O-3 (SS-64). He also served aboard R-11 (SS-88) and R-14 (SS-91) – the latter famously “sailing” into Hilo in 1921 using makeshift sails.

His notable service is now honored in the Pacific Fleet Submarine Museum’s collection, including personal keepsakes like a German-language prayer book and a brass model of the surrendered German U-boat UB-88, which he used as a paperweight.
