Deep Learning Demands Revisiting

Annual Celebrations Provide Lessons

The origin of February’s designation as Black History Month illuminates a key learning principle that coaches can emphasize with students.

Notable scholar and historian Carter G. Woodson saw the ways in which Black history was, in his words, "overlooked, ignored, and even suppressed by the writers of history textbooks and the teachers who use them." As part of his efforts to create institutional structures that would bring this history to light, he began Negro History Week in February of 1926, intentionally choosing a week that featured the birthdays of both Frederick Douglass and Abraham Lincoln. By the 1970s, this had developed into the Black History Month tradition celebrated today.

Learning science demonstrates that when a brain interacts with information actively and repeatedly over time, it is more likely to understand, retain, and be able to apply it. Much as Black History Month provides a regular opportunity for citizens to be reminded, to reflect, and to extend knowledge, students can create learning structures that serve the same purpose. Coaches can share ideas and strategies such as spaced repetition, self-testing, or interleaving (more on these, and links, in this Mind/Shift article featuring learning scientist Benedict Carey), and ask questions about when and how students might integrate regular, active interaction with content over time.

Invite your coachees to design and welcome reminders and structures. With them, learners can strengthen, deepen, and extend their knowledge.

Make 2025 the Year Coaching Solves Higher Ed’s Toughest Challenges

Higher education is grappling with unprecedented challenges—rising mental health crises, the need for greater career readiness, and the unfortunate reality that many students struggle to secure meaningful employment or are let go shortly after starting. These issues affect not only individual students but also university outcomes like enrollment, retention, and long-term institutional success.

By equipping your staff with coaching training, you can help students build resilience, achieve meaningful employment, and address many challenges that universities face today.  Allocate your budget toward LifeBound’s training options this year and plan ahead to ensure your institution is prepared to address these critical needs effectively.  Let’s create a campus-wide culture of coaching and make an impact in 2025!
