Evicting Children: How Babies Bear the Brunt of the Nation’s Housing Crisis and What We Can Do About It

January 30 | 3:00 PM - 4:15 PM EST

In October 2023, the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences published a study revealing that the Americans who are the most at risk of eviction are babies and toddlers, and that children under the age of 5 make up the largest group by age of people whose households have had an eviction action filed against them. The risk of eviction for all children under the age of 18 is consistently high.

This webinar will review the study’s findings and examine its implications for policies and practices to stabilize children, youth, and families. In addition, you'll learn from practitioners about efforts to prevent evictions among families and respond to the needs of all family members when evictions do occur. Finally, the group will look at policy reforms that can prevent and mitigate harm.

New Proposed HUD Rule

30-Day Notification Requirement Prior to Termination of Lease for Nonpayment of Rent

Under this proposed rule, when tenants who reside in public housing or in properties receiving Project-Based Rental Assistance (PBRA) face eviction for nonpayment of rent, public housing agencies (PHAs) and owners would need to provide those tenants with written notification at least 30 days prior to the commencement of a formal judicial eviction procedure for lease termination. Public comments are open until January 30.

Provider Opportunity

My Dog is My Home Fellowship Program

Opportunity to Learn about Co-sheltering Programs

About 3 times a year, My Dog Is My Home holds "Open Houses" in the following locations - New York City, Los Angeles, and Cincinnati. At these Open Houses, My Dog is My Home works with a host site they have identified as a model operator of emergency shelter and/or PSH that keeps people and pets together (co-sheltering).

My Dog is My Home invites providers in the local area to come to the host site for a 1/2-day program to learn about the co-sheltering program and then take a tour, and then the regional cohort is provided with quarterly follow-up calls to support any further exploration of co-sheltering implementation.

Now they are able to fund travel expenses for a small number of providers outside of these 3 locations that are interested in learning more about co-sheltering but do not have a model program in their area.

Applications are accepted and screened on a rolling basis. For 2024, the application portal will open January 1, 2024 and close on October 1, 2024. *Only one application is needed per applying organization."
