Alameda County District Attorney Nancy O’Malley spoke at a press conference on July 26 to address the recent uptick in violence against members of Asian American Pacific Islander community.
“My office continues to stand with our community in denouncing the hate-motivated violence that is committed against Asian Americans and the AAPI community,” said District Attorney O’Malley during the press conference in Oakland’s Chinatown.
“These perpetrators are ruthless, and they are aggressive, particularly in the streets of Chinatown thinking they are immune from being caught. We have to put a stop to that. We must work together to identify, arrest and prosecute these perpetrators that are particularly preying on elder Asian Americans and on members of the AAPI community before another death, injury, or trauma occurs,” she said.

PEOPLE V. FRED BATES SR.
On July 22, 2021, a jury found defendant Fred Bates Sr., 64, guilty of attempted murder of a 52-year-old woman.
The attempted murder occurred on Oct. 13, 2019 on International Boulevard in Oakland, where the victim was shot in the upper left arm and right eye.
The victim said she was driving to a homeless encampment on the 1200 block of 42nd Avenue to see friends. When she saw Bates, the two got into an argument over drugs. As she began to walk away from the conversation, Bates took out a gun and shot her.

On July 29, “Beloved: An Insistence” took place on the streets of Oakland, an artistic outreach event that brings visual representation and awareness to the children and youth being sex trafficked in the city.
The garden altars installations are embedded with resources, such as food, water, and during the COVID-19 pandemic, items such as masks, gloves, and hand sanitizer.
The art piece “Everyone Deserves their Springtime” by artist Andrew Johnstone, with guidance by DA Nancy O’Malley, advocate and survivor Regina Evans, and Sharmin Bock was featured on T-shirts.
“The woman in the art is all of us—those in the anti-trafficking movement, those survivors once held into slavery, evolving from the darkness in the early years, to life, growth, joy, and the beauty of the future for all.
She, like all of us, give hope and love back into the darkness of human trafficking,” said the artist.
