Company illegally disposed of hazardous waste at its California facilities
Alameda County District Attorney Nancy O’Malley announced that her office, along with fifteen other district attorneys and one city attorneys statewide, settled a case with Old Dominion Freight Line (ODFL) resolving allegations that the company failed to properly manage and dispose of hazardous waste at its facilities throughout the state.
ODFL, a trucking transportation company, is ordered to pay a total of $1.36 million in civil penalties, costs, and supplemental environmental projects. It is also ordered to implement an improved hazardous waste compliance program at its service centers and repair facilities in California.

On Tuesday, August 2, staff from our office participated in over 75 different National Night Out events throughout Alameda County! We had Victim Witness Advocates, Inspectors, Deputy District Attorneys, Family Justice Center Navigators and others from our office who were able to provide resources and information needed for the Alameda County community.
National Night Out is an opportunity to bring neighbors and law enforcement together to create a safer Alameda County. We would like to thank all the community members who hosted block parties and organized the evening. Thank you for an amazing turnout!

New Director of Victim Witness Assistance Division Named
|

Maria Suniga remembers the first case she was assigned to that involved a young child. As a Victim-Witness Advocate at the time, it stuck with her, even 24 years later.
Maria, who began her career with the District Attorney’s Office in 1998 was recently named the Director of the Victim Witness Assistance Division. She began her career as a bi-lingual advocate, for a wide variety of cases that ranged from child sexual assault, to homicides to domestic violence. In her early days, she’d travel to every courthouse in the county to be there with victims while they testified in court.
“They had a lasting impact on me, and I hope I left an impression with them,” she said.
She still keeps in touch with some of those victims to this day.

Being an advocate is much more than just attending court hearings. It’s walking victims through the criminal justice system process, connecting them with resources, and being a supportive person when they are going through a difficult time.
Maria now continues to work on spreading that message as best she can: getting out in the community at resource fairs or word of mouth so others become more aware that advocates are here to help.
“I’m still surprised how many people don’t know about our office,” she said.
She takes pride in the internship program, which helps open an avenue for college students to become familiar with the role of an advocate.
When Maria first applied to become a victim witness advocate, she didn’t realize that every county has some form of a Victim-Witness Assistance Program.
Maria credits a friend, and former coworker from a domestic violence agency for alerting her of the advocate position. That friend, is now current Assistant Director Jenifer Mello. When Maria heard from Jenifer about the job, it opened her eyes.
“The job has a deep sense of purpose on the human level. That’s what keeps me going,” Maria said. “I need to have that human impact and feel the sense of being helpful to those in need.”

PEOPLE VS LESTER WALLACE JR.

A jury found Defendant Levester Wallace Jr. guilty of felony domestic violence causing injury and felony false imprisonment by violence.
On February 25, 2019, Jane Doe returned home after a night out with her cousins. When she got home, Defendant Wallace grabbed her by the hair and demanded her phone and whereabouts. Defendant released her but followed her into the bedroom closet where he punched her in the head and strangled her to the point that she almost lost consciousness.
DDA Monica Brock prosecuted the case, with assistance from Inspector Rich Niven and Victim Witness Advocate Erica Chavis.

Maria Suniga recuerda el primer caso que le asignaron que involucraba a un niño pequeño. Como defensora de víctimas y testigos en ese momento, ese caso se quedó con ella, incluso 24 años después.
María, quien comenzó su carrera en la Oficina del Fiscal de Distrito en 1998, fue nombrada recientemente Directora de la División de Asistencia a Víctimas y Testigos. Comenzó su carrera como defensora bilingüe, para una amplia variedad de casos que iban desde agresión sexual infantil hasta homicidios y violencia doméstica. En sus primeros días, viajaba a todos los juzgados del condado para estar allí con las víctimas mientras testificaban en el tribunal.
“Tuvieron un impacto duradero en mí, y espero haber dejado una impresión en ellos”, dijo.
Ella todavía se mantiene en contacto con algunas de esas víctimas hasta el día de hoy.
Ser un defensor es mucho más que solo asistir a las audiencias judiciales. Es guiar a las víctimas a través del proceso del sistema de justicia penal, conectarlas con los recursos y ser una persona de apoyo cuando atraviesan un momento difícil.

Maria ahora continúa trabajando para difundir ese mensaje lo mejor que puede: salir a la comunidad en ferias de recursos o de boca en boca para que otros se den cuenta de que los defensores están aquí para ayudar.
“Todavía me sorprende cuántas personas no conocen nuestra oficina”, dijo.
Se enorgullece del programa de internos, que ayuda a abrir una vía para que los estudiantes universitarios se familiaricen con el papel de un defensor.
Cuando María solicitó por primera vez convertirse en defensora de testigos de víctimas, no se dio cuenta de que todos los condados tienen algún tipo de programa de asistencia para víctimas y testigos.
María le da crédito a una amiga y ex compañera de trabajo de una agencia de violencia doméstica por alertarla sobre la posición de defensora. Esa amiga, ahora es la actual subdirectora Jenifer Mello. Cuando María escuchó de Jenifer sobre el trabajo, abrió los ojos.
“El trabajo tiene un profundo sentido de propósito a nivel humano. Eso es lo que me mantiene en marcha”, dijo María. “Necesito tener ese impacto humano y sentir la sensación de ser útil para los necesitados”.

El 25 de febrero de 2019, la víctima regresó a casa después de una noche de fiesta con sus primos. Cuando llegó a casa, el acusado Wallace la agarró del cabello y le exigió su teléfono y su paradero.
