Exploring the United States Census

The 1950 census records were released April 1st, 2022, seventy-two years after the information was gathered. 

Join us on Thursday, April 14, at 4:00 PM for "All Things Relative: Finding Family at the Library" a virtual program with historian and librarian Kathy Nielsen.  We'll look at the history of the U.S. census, what it can tell us about our ancestors, and what's special about the 1950 census rolls.

Join us on the upstairs terrace to learn from the author about the fascinating legacy of America's newsboys.

Poetry Workshop - These Hands

Our hands trace the story of our lives - they show where we have been, what we've made, and remind us of past experiences. Reflect on your personal life journey through this guided, virtual workshop.

Space is limited to 10 participants to ensure that everyone has a chance to share their completed composition. Copies of our writing prompt will be provided for participants prior to the workshop.

Are you good at organizing things and keeping them neat and tidy? Are you able to work quickly and accurately? Do you enjoy physical labor? Monterey Public Library is currently recruiting for a Library Page. Duties include shelving materials, running errands, and loading and pushing heavy carts. An ideal candidate is able to work a consistent schedule 20 hours per week. Available shifts are Tuesday through Saturday, 9:15 to 1:15 or 2:15 to 6:15. The starting rate is $15.14 per hour.

Students have signed up. Now its time to gather the audience! Join us on Zoom for our second annual student history slam competition and cheer on our young historians! Middle and high school students will share 3 -5 minute presentations on local history topics. Cash awards are offered for best use of resources, creativity, and balanced perspectives.

Preschool Storytime: Join library staff for storytime Thursdays at 10:15 AM in the Library's picture book area. All are welcome, especially ages 2-5. No registration required.
