DHS NJROTC hosted the 2017
NJROTC Navy Ball Friday, March 17th.  Over half of the NJROTC company and nearly 150 participants were in attendance and enjoyed a memorable evening belatedly celebrating the 241st birthday of the U.S. Navy (October 13, 1775). The evening commenced with the Presentation of Colors and traditional cutting of the Navy birthday cake, followed by dinner with periodic toastings by selected cadets of the four services and service members currently deployed.  After dinner, selected cadets executed the traditional military "Dining Out" U.S. flag folding, Passing of Old Glory, and the POW/MIA ceremonies.  All three ceremonies were exceptionally delivered.  Following the well received opening remarks by the DHS Principal, Mr. Anthony Smith, 2nd Lt. Louis Roger, USMC spoke about his brief experiences transitioning from  a college NROTC student to Marine Platoon Commander on the verge deploying to Iraq in charge of 42 Marines.  The Honorary Guest Speaker, retired Army Captain and Olympic Fold Medalist (4X100 relays in the 1968 Olympics)

On Wednesday, March 22, the annual Gwinnett County Career Technical  Education (CTE) Student of the Year (SOTY) Banquet was held at the Busbee Cneter on the campus of Gwinnett Technical College. Twenty-three CTE SOTYcandidates from Gwinnett County high schools had previously been interviewed and evaluated over the last two months.  The top three finalists were identified and DHS NJROTC Cadet Keyon Whyte was honored as 1st Runner Up.  This was an exceptional honor! Well done, Cadet Whyte!!

Please congratulate the following students. Their Laws of Life Essays were selected from hundreds of student essays by their 9th grade Language Arts teachers. Now the wonderful folks who sponsor the Georgia Rotary Clubs Laws of Life Essay Contest have identified them as the cream of the crop among all entries in Georgia! Annalise's essay is moving on to the final round. Wish her luck!!!
