University of Alabama appoints new vice president for research and economic development

The University of Alabama
announced on Tuesday that Dr. Russell J. Mumper has been named vice president for research and economic development at the university effective January 1 of the coming year.
As a vice provost from the University of Georgia who previously led four research centers or institutes, co-founded five start-up companies and received nearly $30 million in research grants and contracts, Mumper was selected following an extensive national search.
In a release, UA President Stuart R. Bell expressed the university's enthusiasm for the new hire. Mumper will provide leadership for advancing UA's research and economic development efforts, fulfilling one of the primary goals of UA's Strategic Plan.
Huntsville is among the nation's top 10 destinations for tech jobs, according to a new survey.
CompTIA, an information technology association and provider of IT certifications, places Huntsville 10th among the nation's "Tech Towns."
This is based on data on tech job openings, median salaries and cost of living.
The ranking was based on job posting data from Aug. 2017 to July of this year among metropolitan areas greater than 250,000, where demand for tech jobs is the greatest. The cities' rankings were also based according to cost of living, the number of open IT positions and projected job growth over the next year, and the next five years.
BIRMINGHAM, Ala., October 23 - Trussville GK AdvantageSite in Jefferson County has received an Alabama AdvantageSite designation.
The AdvantageSite program requires that community economic development organizations provide documentation specific to a proposed industrial site, including a set of standard data related to ownership/ control, environmental and geotechnical conditions, and infrastructure status. Sites must also meet size, zoning and accessibility requirements.
The Trussville GK AdvantageSite is a 74.5-acre site located in the Trussville Industrial Park. The site is approximately 3.5 miles from Interstate 59. The site is owned by the Trussville Industrial Development Board. All utilities are located at the site.
The application process was managed locally by the Trussville Industrial Development Board and Sain Associates.
TROY University Listed As Top Alabama College in "Best for Vets" Rankings

A ranking revealed Monday morning names Troy University as the top-ranked school in the state that caters to the needs of veterans and military members and their families.
It is called RebootCamp: The Military Times. It's an online source military and veterans members use for information. And Troy officials were pleased with this year's results.
"We were the highest ranked institution of higher education in the state of alabama in the particular way," Troy University's Senior Chancellor for Advancement General Walter Givhan said.
The Military Times surveyed hundreds of colleges across the country. Institutions were chosen using culture, academic quality, student support and financial aid for veterans and military.
