The 2023 Sustainable Campus Index — based on the Sustainability Tracking, Assessment & Rating System — recognizes ESF as a Top Performer in six categories, including a Top 10 ranking for doctoral-granting institutions.

ESF Professor Dr. Wendong Tao Receives SUNY Technology Accelerator Fund Award

Dr. Wendong Tao, professor in the Department of Environmental Resources Engineering, is one of eight researchers in the 64-campus SUNY system to receive seed funding through the Technology Accelerator Fund (TAF). 

SUNY Chancellor King Names ESF President Mahoney, Student Isabel Valentín to New Sustainability Advisory Council

President Joanie Mahoney and student Isabel Valentín have been appointed to the SUNY Sustainability Advisory Council by SUNY Chancellor John B. King, Jr. The Council will accelerate SUNY’s leadership on sustainability and climate action and focus on ways to reduce SUNY’s environmental footprint, promote green workforce development programs, spur research and innovation on advanced climate issues, and encourage other applied learning methods.

New $100,000 grant aims to tackle wealth gap in city of Syracuse

Assistant Professor Daniel Cronan, along with collaborators from Syracuse University, were awarded a $100,000 grant for their research project to identify the impacts of historic housing policies that targeted underprivileged communities in the city and address them by building experimental structures.

Syracuse’s community gardens grow food, friendships, and grocery-bill savings

Graduate student Ashmita Das’ master’s thesis focused on community gardening in Syracuse and how people used them during the height of the Covid pandemic. Das found that many people joined gardens to connect with nature and learn to grow their food while living in a city.

Steve Morrison and the Trailhead Cafe team catered a recent event and impressed everyone in attendance! Self-described food snobs couldn't get enough of the "restaurant quality" food. Even more exciting (to me) was that breakfast and lunch were completely zero-waste events. The attendees were zero-waste experts and not a single suggestion for improvement was made. Thank you, Steve and team!

The Syracuse University Infrastructure Institute is the first institute of its kind, nationally and globally, integrating all colleges and schools to advance infrastructure delivery and policy. It’s never too early to think about your career aspirations and the Fall Career & Internship Fair is the perfect place to start. More than 100 organizations are coming to recruit for both full-time jobs and internships; all class years and majors are encouraged to attend.

Students should prepare for the fair by doing the following:


  • Update their resume and bring multiple copies
  • Research the organizations ahead of time in Handshake
  • Dress professionally


A photographer will be available for free professional headshots from 10:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.

ESF’s new Middle States Liaison, Dr. Judith Sciple, will be on campus


Wednesday, Oct. 4 I 10:45-11:15 a.m. I 24 Marshall Hall


Dr. Sciple will hold an open session for faculty, staff, and students that will include a summary of the commission’s most recent action, an overview of what is to happen next with the steps toward success, and time for questions.


Seating is limited, so we are asking you to RSVP to this event and send any questions ahead of time (if we run out of time for questions, we can send them to Dr. Sciple after the meeting). Please RSVP to Jeremy Hall, Institutional Research and Assessment Coordinator, and include your questions in the email.
