Do you know about American Airline's Mobility Identification Number?
I recently made my flight reservations to Portugal and South Africa on American Airlines. Afterwards, I called the Special Needs Desk at AA to discuss seats and let them know what type of mobility device I would be traveling with. They recently implemented a new system where they assign you a Mobility Identification Number or MOBI #. They take down all the pertinent information on your equipment including make and model number, dimensions, weight, battery type, voltage, amps, etc. Once your equipment is approved, you receive an email with the MOBI #. I printed this and will take it to the airport with me. The purpose of this is to prevent you from having problems at the airport. Both you and the gate agents and crew will know that everything has been approved and is ready to fly. They explain to you exactly what you need to do in terms of removing batteries and preparing them for flight. I think this is a great step forward in reducing stress from disabled travelers.
Please check with your airline of choice to see if they are using a similar program.
