On Thursday, May 12th at 7:30pm, Composers Concordance presents the contemporary music concert 'Eclectic Virtuosi: Glen Velez & Friends,' to be held at Goddard Riverside - Bernie Wohl Center on Manhattan's upper west side. Four-time Grammy winner and the founding father of the modern frame drum movement, the legendary master percussionist and composer Glen Velez will perform a set of his original compositions. Rhythm vocalist Loire Cotler will perform the world premiere of a new Velez composition entitled 'Rotation 2.' The interdisciplinary flutist Margaret Lancaster will perform new works by Max Duykers, Gene Pritsker, and Eric Lyon. Composers Milica Paranosic and Dan Cooper will perform works for live electronics and 7-string bass guitar. For the grand finale, Velez, Lancaster, and Loire will join together for the world premiere of Velez' composition entitled 'Rooftop.'
"For the past 30 years, Composers Concordance has been a booster for local composers, through both its concerts across the city and a record label."
-The Wall Street Journal.
"Enterprising new music organization"
-The New York Times.
Staying in rotation for thirty years in NYC is a rare feat. In the case of a new music presenting organization, it requires not only diligence and cognizance of achievements of the past, but also an ethic of keeping one's ear to the ground for emerging stylistic and technological developments, as well as talented new composers on the scene. Composers Concordance strives to present contemporary music in innovative ways, with an emphasis on thematic programming. It has also created a new record label, Composers Concordance Records, with distribution by Naxos. Directors Gene Pritsker and Dan Cooper co-curate the programs, and lead the CompCord Ensemble, Chamber Orchestra, String Orchestra, and Big Band. Associate Directors for the 2015-16 season are Milica Paranosic, Peter Jarvis, Svjetlana Bukvich, and Melissa Grey. Composers Concordance's overriding vision is to promote contemporary music, composers, and new works as a rightful and respected part of society. Good music, performed and recorded well, pushing the boundaries of sound and composition.
Goddard Riverside's Community Arts program, directed by Susan Macaluso, hosts a variety of low-cost or free music and art events, workshops, and special programs for members of the Upper West Side community. Its goal is to enrich the neighborhood, to engage in meaningful discussions, and to give everyone an opportunity to experience the beauty and education of art in many forms.
