Principal's News
Eddins Beautification
by Sharon Havard

Last Thursday we hosted the Student Council Leadership Conference at Eddins. There were several visitors from around and outside the district and they shared so many compliments about our beautiful new school! What great feedback! It is amazing to see how the "newness" of our school can really brighten up the day for students and staff! We've known for years that a student's classroom, when made warm and inviting, can positively impact a students success. We've always been so proud of the classroom environments that teachers have created, and now, we are equally as proud of our total school environment!

Parent conferences are just around the corner! If you have not scheduled a time to meet with your child's teacher yet, please do so soon. Times fill up quickly and we want to make sure that we are able to meet with all parents.

Have you noticed the planter containers out front?  We'd like to extend special thanks to Tom and Carol Milson, grandparents of Jack Webb, one of our first graders, who graciously coordinated a donation of beautiful mums from Home Depot for the front of our school.

They have really taken care to make sure the outside of our school is just as pretty and welcoming as the inside of our building! We appreciate their support of Eddins and the extra time invested in the beautification of our campus!

Let's make it a great week, Wildcats!

Box Tops Due Next Monday October 16th
by Marie Robertson

Which Wildcat student will take the title this Fall? Our Box Tops collection deadline is next Monday!

The Eddins student that clips, collects, and turns in the most non-expired Box Tops by our October 16th deadline will win 2 free Fall Festival wristbands! In the event of a tie, a drawing will be held between the qualifying students.

Use the plastic baggies that were sent home last month, or use your own (labeled with student name and homeroom teacher) to collect Box Tops and help raise money for our school. Look for the Box Tops symbol found on many everyday grocery and office items.

Don't delay, start collecting today. 10-cents a Box Top adds up quickly for our Wildcats! Happy collecting!

Be an Attendance HERO - Here, Every Day, Ready, & On Time
by Jan Peaden

We are well into our first nine weeks and our students are doing amazing! However, it's important to take a moment to emphasize how important regular school attendance is for a student to make the most of his/her education.  Regular attendance helps our students benefit from teacher-led activities, build each day's learning on the previous day's instruction and grow as an individual.

Absences from class may hinder a student's mastery of academic skills. In addition, a tardy student also misses key instructional elements and interrupts class when they come in late - even if it is just a minute or two.  Classes begin promptly at 8 a.m. each morning.

Beginning in October, we will be highlighting our daily attendance so that all of our students, teachers and parents can take notice. A bulletin board in the front hallway will showcase how well our Wildcats are doing at being Attendance HEROS. The class with the best attendance record each month will be recognized and rewarded. At the end of the year, the class with the best attendance record for the year will also be rewarded.

While we understand students must stay home when they are ill, we respectfully request that students and parents make every effort to avoid unnecessary absences. Per MISD policy, only eight (8) parent notes will be accepted during the year for absences.  State law requires that students attend 90% of scheduled school days to receive credit. We appreciate your support to ensure that your child arrives to school so we can maximize learning. If you have any questions about your student's attendance, please call Jan Peaden at (469) 302-6600.

Learning Commons News

Storybook Character Pumpkin Patch
The Learning Commons is hosting our annual Storybook Character Pumpkin Patch! Pumpkins can be brought in anytime until Friday, October 27th. Print off your entry form from the Eddins school website. Please be sure to remember to use pie pumpkins or plastic pumpkins and choose a storybook character, not a movie character. There will be winners chosen from each grade level. Winners will receive their choice of a book.

Caldecott Kid Reading Program
Our Caldecott Kid Reading Program is off to a great start! This reading program, designed for Kindergarteners, 1st graders, and 2nd graders, encourages the students to read award-winning picture books and exposes them to some great quality literature. First graders were recently re-introduced to the program and they are anxious to read as many Caldecott books as they can! Kindergarteners will be introduced to the program in a few weeks. Second graders can still participate by asking for a new crown (if they have already earned one) and start adding more jewels as they continue to read additional Caldecott books. Click here for more information on our Caldecott Kids Reading Program.

If you have any questions or concerns about books or the Learning Commons, please contact Peggy Perret at (469) 302-6679 ( pperret@mckinneyisd.net) or Lesley Nill at (469) 302-6623 ( lnill@mckinneyisd.net).
Wildcats with Heart:  Hurricane Harvey Relief
Eddins Service Project
by Jenni Bucl

Thank you to all of our families who have already showed their support for Bear Creek Elementary and the students and staff in their community who were displaced by the recent flooding caused by Hurricane Harvey.

Recently, Mrs. Havard shared the the Bear Creek Elementary Relief Wish List, which outlines the most-needed items families could use right now.

Bear Creek, of the Katy ISD in Houston, had 17 staff members who's homes were flooded and 70% of their student families are economically disadvantaged and have also now lost their homes and possessions.

Items ordered from the Bear Creek Elementary Relief Amazon Wish List will be delivered directly to their school and 100% will go to those affected.

Your support and generosity are greatly appreciated by the Bear Creek community and such a huge blessing to so many people who have been displaced. Thank you to all of our Eddins families who show every day that we are Wildcats with Heart!

Get Creative with Reflections
Reflect on the theme. Create an original artwork. Be recognized.
by Kelli Mau

Attention all Wildcats! It's time to start planning and creating your entries for this school year's Reflections program.

PTA Reflections is a nationally acclaimed student recognition program to encourage artistic creativity in the classroom and at home. Students of all grades and abilities may participate and explore the arts based on the 2017-2018 theme: Within Reach.

This annual arts program open to all Eddins students of PTA member families, provides children the opportunity to create works of art on the year's chosen theme in six categories: dance choreography, film production, literature, musical composition, photography, and visual arts. Students may submit one or more entries in any category or in multiple categories.

Additionally, the National PTA Special Artist Division is an option for students with disabilities who receive services under IDEA or Section 504 to have the opportunity and accommodations they may need to participate fully in the program. The Special Artist Division offers modified rules and guidelines to ensure that every student has the chance to be part of the National PTA Reflections program.

Official entry forms and detailed rules are available on the Reflections poster board in the front office. Specific rules and requirements for each of the categories are provided there for your review. You may also find these forms, as well as more information about the National PTA program in Texas at: www.txpta.org/reflections.

Please contact Kelli Mau, Reflections Chair, at cranekel@hotmail.com with any questions. Deadline for entries is October 27, 2017.

Reflections has encouraged millions of students to express themselves by giving positive recognition for their efforts, so let's celebrate the arts and submit your entries, Wildcats!
