Summer of severe heat predicted as Bureau of Meteorology declares El Niño

The Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) has declared two major climate drivers linked to hot, dry conditions are officially underway in Australia, prompting further warnings that extreme heat could hit this spring and summer. After months of anticipation, BOM has confirmed the world's most consequential climate driver, the El Niño weather pattern, is active over the Pacific for the first time in eight years.

Australia

And so we all know exactly what that means …

Understanding El Niño

Now commonly referred to as just El Niño, the climatic phenomenon is a part of the El Niño-Southern Oscillation, which also features its sister phase, La Nina.

The head of a New South Wales mine facing criminal charges has used a public inquiry to apologise to residents near Australia's biggest gold operation after they raised health concerns about dust coming from its site.

Australia abandons efforts to eradicate deadly parasite varroa mite after 15 months

Australia's fire alert system explained as El Niño sets scene for drier than average summer

Here's what a 'Catastrophic' fire danger rating actually means.

It is only September and already Australia's fire danger dial has been swung to red on several occasions. With projections for a hot and dry end to 2023 under the El Niño climate pattern, and increased fuel loads across some parts of the country, it is unlikely to be the last warning like it. So when you see a rating of extreme and catastrophic fire danger, what is it actually telling you? And what should you be doing?
