Hi Deborah,
Happy September!
As I cheered for my grandbabies first day of school I am reminded that engaging in lifelong learning becomes an essential part of maintaining mental agility, emotional well-being, and overall life satisfaction as we age.
The pursuit of knowledge and new skills can offer many benefits, including improved cognitive function, social engagement, and a greater sense of purpose.
I also happen to love learning so it's a win-win!
Here are 5 ways to continue learning as we get older:
- Join local classes and workshops at your local libraries, and senior centers often offer a variety of classes and workshops tailored for older adults. Whether it's learning a new language, picking up a craft, or mastering computer skills, these classes provide a structured environment for continuous learning and social interaction.
- Take Advantage of Online Courses-One benefit that came from COVID was that the opportunity to learn for free expanded exponentially! Platforms like Coursera, edX, and Khan Academy offer free and paid courses on virtually any subject you can imagine. This flexibility allows you to learn at your own pace and from the comfort of your home.
- Attend talks, lectures and seminars at our many colleges and universities to engage with subject matter experts and other like-minded learners.
- Joining a book club is a fantastic way to keep your mind sharp, and joining a book club adds a social element to the activity. Book clubs encourage discussion, critical thinking, and the exploration of new genres and authors.
- Volunteer your time and expertise can be an enriching experience. Teaching a skill or sharing knowledge with others not only reinforces your own learning but also builds connections and gives back to the community. Visited someplace interesting?-offer to share your experience, Know how to tie a tie?-share it at local youth group, You know more about some subjects than many other people do-share it!
The world is full of opportunities waiting to be explored, and it's never too late to start learning something new. We'd love to hear how you're embracing lifelong learning! Share your experiences and tips with us by posting on our social media pages. Your story could inspire others to embark on their own journey of lifelong learning.
