Dear Founders,
It was such a wonderful way to start the Advent season last Sunday - Rashad Addy-Davis singing a solo, a growing Praise Team with a special solo part by Ava Simone, a message from our denomination's moderator, and more - all surrounded by the beautiful Advent colors/decorations by Larry Rodriguez, Mary-Margaret Smith, Bam and Maria Noriega. Thanks to all of you for being such a blessing to us!
We also dedicated our Communion to World AIDS Day, a tradition honored all over the world that was started by the late Rev. David Farrell, former pastor of MCC San Diego. Isn't it exciting to know that we can still touch lives even after we have transitioned from this life? Thank you, Rev. Farrell.
Speaking of transitions, we were sorry to report the death of one of our long-time members: Jerry Silverstein. Jerry recently found out he had cancer, and after having Thanksgiving lunch with our folks at MCC UCC In the Valley last Thursday, he drove home, had a slight accident, and was taken to the hospital. They found he had a brain tumor and a brain bleed. He never regained consciousness. I'm so glad his last hours were spent with fellow-MCCers, eating, laughing, and having a great time. May we all be so blessed!
Our Advent theme this year is, Emmanuel: God With Us. Last Sunday, we talked about A Shocking Hope. This Sunday, we'll talk about Just Peace. If you'd like to read ahead, check out Psalm 23 (New King James Version). I look forward to our time together in worship once again!
Pastor Keith

Reading is taken from Psalm 23
The New King James Version
The Lord is my shepherd;
I shall not want.
You make me to lie down in green pastures;
You lead me beside the still waters.
You restore my soul;
You lead me in the paths of righteousness
For Your name’s sake.
Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death,
I will fear no evil;
For You are with me;
Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me.
You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies;
You anoint my head with oil;
My cup runs over.
Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me
All the days of my life;
And I will dwell in the house of the Lord
Forever.

MCC Clergy Spiritual Retreat in Assisi, Italy
In early November 2024, a group of MCC Clergy met for a Spiritual Retreat in Assisi, Italy— the home of St. Francis and St. Claire, and our own Pastor Keith Mozingo was there.
The retreat was led by Sr. Marietta, a Franciscan sister, and Rev. Axel Schwaigert, MCC Stuttgart. The participants came from many different countries: Finland, Scotland, England, USA, Singapore and Germany. Appreciation to the Flourish program that helped with the funding.
"We came seeking. Some of us were weary, some of us worn out, some of us running dry. Some of us were seeking respite. Some, seeking refuge. We found more than what we were looking for. God met us where we were, and filled us with overflowing grace.
“In the quietness of nature, in the frescoes in ancient churches, in the reading of the Book of the Cross, in the sharing of gelato, in the conversations over dinner, in the morning worship, and the evening reflections, there were glimpses of the Divine.
"We felt renewed - it was a powerful time as we came together as companions on a journey that helped connect us to both the Franciscan tradition, and what makes us MCC. We may not have known each other before this, but at the end of this retreat we parted as kindred spirits reminded of our calling in a time of even greater need for faith, hope and love."

Flourish is new!
We are so excited to share that leadership development for all MCC churches is now coordinated through FLOURISH. The focus of the program is to support all clergy and ministry leaders, (no matter the geographical location) particularly those who are experiencing change. Change comes in a variety of ways that includes both professional and personal.
We took the best of our former efforts in Thriving in Ministry (from the Lilly Endowment grant funding) and added funds designated by the Governing Board to ensure we can offer leadership development around the globe for our churches.
| |
Focusing on Leadership Development
Flourish is committed to providing Leadership Development for both clergy and lay leaders. Leadership development is a process that helps people improve their skills, knowledge, and confidence to perform in leadership roles.
Some of the benefits of Leadership development can help people develop the following capabilities:
- Self-awareness: Being aware of oneself and how one interacts with others
- Resilience: Being able to adapt to challenges and
- Influence: Being able to impact the thoughts and actions of others

Change In Covid-19 Protocols | |
As we continue to cope with Covid-19, we are changing our protocols. The new protocols are in line with the rest of LA County. Until further notice, here are our guidelines:
1. We will no longer require vaccinations and boosters for church attendance, though we highly encourage them.
2. We will make wearing masks optional. Please feel free to continue wearing masks as you feel comfortable.
3. We ask people that have symptoms of (or tested positive for) Covid, flu, monkeypox, or any other easily communicable disease to please refrain from attending until they are well.
As we have from the very beginning of the pandemic, we will continue to keep in line with the advice of the LA County Public Health Department. Thank you so much for your patience as we navigate new guidelines.
