**COMMUNITY MESSAGE**
 
Call For The Protection Of All New Yorkers
Especially The Poorest And Undocumented Communities Impacted By The Novel Coronavirus 

We know that the world has changed dramatically in the last few weeks. We nevertheless remain steadfast in our mission to serve you and provide you with useful information to help you navigate these uncertain times. Above all, we remain optimistic about the future, with the hope and faith that this, too, shall pass.
 
The reverberations of the global human and economic impact of the novel coronavirus pandemic are being felt everywhere, but most intensely within our largely marginalized communities. Historically marginalized neighborhoods, where most of the poor and immigrant New Yorkers live, will be among the most acutely impacted by this crisis because they also struggle with health and income disparities that make then especially vulnerable at this time.  
 
In New York, low-income communities of color and immigrant communities will face the brunt of the health and medical crisis that is upon us, but also of the growing economic crisis in the form of evictions, mounting debt, job loss, and community disinvestment. The spread of the novel coronavirus has further exposed the long-established gaps in our social infrastructure.  
 
These historical inequities will be laid bare and felt more intensely than ever before. A crisis of this scale requires a commensurate and comprehensive response. It is the responsibility of the federal, state, and local governments to act swiftly, strategically, and boldly to minimize the catastrophic economic and social consequences of the novel coronavirus pandemic. We call on our government - at all levels - to act decisively to provide every American with the resources they need to endure these difficult times and without the risk of losing their jobs, incomes, homes, and their very lives.  
 
Additionally, the City needs to ensure that all New Yorkers who fall under the "essential workers" category are protected and provided with adequate protective gear as they perform their duties. These include, Laundromat, supermarket, delivery, and restaurant workers, among others. As one of the epicenters of the novel coronavirus pandemic, New York need to be more aggressive in our approach to combat this virus and protect the most vulnerable New Yorkers.  
 
Lastly, we need to keep in mind that while the Federal Government and the City work to provide financial assistance to the Country, our undocumented brothers and sisters remain vulnerable. We must continue fighting so that they are included within the stimulus package that will help millions of Americans. Undocumented individuals are tax-paying Americans, and they need protections too! We will continue working alongside advocates and community leaders to ensure that they are receiving the resources and protections they need during this time.

  • Immigration Courts (until 4/13): NYC non-detained Immigration Courts (Broadway and Federal Plaza) are CLOSED until further notice. Buffalo non-detained hearings are cancelled.
  • USCIS (until 4/1): All appointments are cancelled.
  • ICE: NYC in-person check-ins are cancelled, telephonic check-ins are still happening. Waiting to hear back for Buffalo/upstate office.
  • Federal Courts: Citizenship Oath Ceremonies cancelled.
  • ICE has cancelled all visitation for those in ICE detention.
  • Immigration enforcement in the communities continues.

Llamado A La Protección De Todos Los Neoyorquinos
Especialmente Las Comunidades Más Pobres E Indocumentadas Afectadas Por El Novel Coronavirus    
 
Sabemos que el mundo ha cambiado dramáticamente en las últimas semanas. Sin embargo, nos mantenemos firmes en nuestra misión de servirles y brindarles información útil para ayudarlos a navegar estos tiempos inciertos. Sobre todo, seguimos siendo optimistas sobre el futuro, con la esperanza y la fe de que esto también pasará.  
 
Las repercusiones del impacto humano y económico a nivel global de la nueva pandemia de coronavirus se sienten en todas partes, pero con mayor intensidad dentro de nuestras comunidades marginadas. Los vecindarios históricamente marginados, donde viven la mayoría de los neoyorquinos pobres e inmigrantes, se encontrarán entre los más afectados por esta crisis porque estas vecindades enfrentan desigualdades de salud y de ingresos que los hacen especialmente vulnerables en este momento.  
 
En Nueva York, las comunidades de bajos ingresos y de inmigrantes enfrentarán la peor parte de la crisis médica y de salud que está sobre nosotros, pero también de la creciente crisis económica en forma de desalojos, deudas crecientes, pérdida de empleos y perdidas en inversiones en sus comunidades. La propagación del nuevo coronavirus ha expuesto aún más las desigualdades estructurales que existen desde hace mucho tiempo en nuestra sociedad.
 
Estas desigualdades históricas quedarán al descubierto y se sentirán más intensamente que nunca. Una crisis de esta escala requiere una respuesta proporcional e integral. Es responsabilidad de los gobiernos federales, estatales y locales actuar de manera rápida, estratégica y audaz para minimizar las catastróficas consecuencias económicas y sociales de la nueva pandemia de coronavirus. Hago un llamado a nuestro gobierno, en todos sus niveles, para que actúe rápidamente para proporcionar a todos los estadounidenses los recursos que necesitan para soportar estos tiempos difíciles y sin el riesgo de perder sus trabajos, ingresos, hogares y sus propias vidas.  
 
Asimismo, la Ciudad debe asegurarse de que todos los neoyorquinos que han sido catalogados como "trabajadores esenciales" estén protegidos y se les proporcione equipo de protección adecuado mientras realizan sus tareas. Estos incluyen trabajadores de lavanderías, supermercados, entregas y restaurantes, entre otros. Como uno de los epicentros de la nueva pandemia de coronavirus, Nueva York debe ser agresivo en su enfoque para combatir este virus y proteger a los neoyorquinos más vulnerables.  
 
Por último, pero no menos importante, debemos tener en cuenta que mientras el Gobierno Federal y la Ciudad trabajan para brindar asistencia financiera al País, nuestros hermanos y hermanas indocumentados siguen siendo vulnerables. Debemos continuar luchando para que se incluyan en el paquete de estímulo que ayudará a millones de estadounidenses. Las personas indocumentadas son estadounidenses que pagan impuestos, ¡y también necesitan protección! Continuaremos trabajando junto con defensores y líderes comunitarios para asegurarnos de que reciban los recursos y protecciones que necesitan durante este tiempo.
