The family worship space is a place for families with children to be able to worship together in the sanctuary. It has room for children to move around, tables to do puzzles, draw, and color. There are also 2 bean bags to read books on. Stop by this Sunday to take a look at this great space for families. | |

This Sunday we’ll hear the choir sing some acapella masterpieces by English Renaissance composers. First are two pieces by William Byrd (c.1540-1623): the Kyrie from his Mass for Four Voices, which we’ll sing each Sunday in Lent, and at communion, Ave verum corpus. At the offertory, we have Lord, for thy tender mercy’s sake. Scholars are uncertain if this anthem is by Richard Farrant (c. 1525-1580) or John Hilton (1565-1609). Whoever wrote it, it’s a favorite of many for good reason.
This past Sunday’s theme was “inheritance.” Ben graciously turned over the Moment for Wondering so that I could reflect on our musical inheritance. Several members remarked on the talk, so I thought I would share the somewhat longer version with you here.
| During Lent we will highlight two hymns. During the early weeks we will sing the ancient text, Kind Maker of the Word. This is a seventh-century Latin hymn, Audi benigne Conditor,” that is attributed to Gregory the Great (c. 540-604). It has been used for centuries during Lent at the daily services prayed in monasteries. Gregory was a nobleman who became a Benedictine monk, and later, pope. He contributed greatly to the universal church, but among musicians he is famous for founding or reestablishing the Roman singing school. Gregorian Chant is named for him. |
Deuteronomy 15:11
“ For there will never cease to be poor in the land. Therefore, I command you, ‘You shall open wide your hand to your brother, to the needy and to the poor, in your and.”
Bill and Mary Lou English have listened and acted on hat command. They have led Northmont’s effort in providing warm meals for the homeless men at the Pleasent Valley Shelter monthly, approaching 30 years. Bill and Mary Lou traditionally served the meal in December, but are now unable to do so. Deacons are looking for a family or group to serve this December. I am sure you have plenty of questions, so contact me, Ken Yoest, at missionstuff@comcast.net or text/call 412-855-1459. I am sure Bill and Mary Lou would not mind discussing this with you as well.

Update as of Feb 29:
I am now through seven of the eight weeks. We are starting to wind up and I will start work on my final project soon. Stay tuned for some more info. 😁
