Dear Terra,

Does thinking about your finances makes you feel inadequate or anxious? April is Financial Literacy Month – a great time to learn more about smart money management.

The Illinois State Treasurer's Office offers a free, secure online program to help you learn how to save for emergencies, clear up debt, understand college savings plans, and put aside money for retirement.

If you're trying to figure out where you stand financially, take a look at the Illinois Financial Wellness Hub, which can recommend tools and other assistance to help you get comfortable with your finances and achieve your goals.

We're giving away safety glasses to watch the solar eclipse on MONDAY

We're so excited about the solar eclipse that will pass through Illinois on Monday, April 8!

As you probably know, you can damage your eyes by looking directly at a solar eclipse. To make sure you can watch this incredible natural phenomenon safely, my office has partnered with the Glen Ellyn Park District to distribute FREE certified safety glasses from the Illinois Optometric Association.

The solar observation glasses are available for pick-up at Ackerman SFC, at 800 St. Charles Road, Spring Avenue Recreation Center, at 185 Spring Ave., and Main Street Recreation Center, 501 Hill Ave. Supplies are limited, so stop by and get yours today!

Congrats to Laura Glaza and Glen House Food Pantry on their Outstanding Service Award!

Laura Glaza, Executive Director of Glen House Food Pantry in Glen Ellyn, was honored by Illinois State Treasurer Michael Frerichs for her Outstanding Commitment to Community Service as part of the treasurer's Women’s History Month recognitions.

Glaza was one of eight Illinois women honored for their outstanding contributions to their communities. She was nominated by food pantry volunteer Karen Craven, who works for the State Treasurer’s office.

The photo at right, taken at the awards ceremony on March 25, shows Michael Frerichs, State Sen. Laura Ellman, Laura Glaza, and Karen Craven. Congratulations to Laura and all the great staff and volunteers at Glen House!

Celebrate Holi, the Hindu spring Festival of Colors, in Naperville SATURDAY

After the end of a long, gray winter, our hearts start to crave the bright colors of spring.

To welcome the return of spring, you're invited to join Simply Vedic, a Naperville-based non-profit, as they celebrate Holi, the Festival of Colors, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, April 6, at Rotary Hill on Naperville's Riverwalk.

The Holi festival is celebrated each spring by Hindus throughout South Asia and around the world. The festival traditionally lasts for two days, and participants celebrate by joyfully throwing brightly colored powders at each other.

Although Holi is deeply rooted in the Hindu tradition, people of all faiths are welcome to join in the celebration. Simply Vedic will be selling bags of safe, dry, organic powders for $2.50 apiece. For safety and health reasons, colors from outside are strictly prohibited. You can click here to learn more.

Spot the cake, win prizes to celebrate the new Helen Plum's library's first birthday

You're invited to wish the new Helen Plum Library building a very happy birthday (and win some cool prizes) next week as they celebrate their first year at 411 S. Main St.

Every day during National Library Week (April 7-13), they'll hide a stuffed plush birthday cake in a different place in the library. If you spot it, you can win gift cards to local restaurants, library swag, and other prizes. Participants must have a Helen Plum Library card to be eligible to win.

To help you find the cake, the Library has posted some hint-filled couplets for each day. You can click here for each day's hints and more information.

GPS speaker will offer tools for parenting adolescents and young adults WEDNESDAY

Children grow up – but to parents, they're always our kids, and it can be hard to balance loving parental concern with respect for their growing autonomy.

If you're trying to find the right way to parent your children as they move through adolescence into young adulthood, you may be interested in the GPS (Glenbard Parent Series) Navigating Healthy Families webinars this coming Wednesday.

Psychologist Laurence Steinberg, a renowned expert on adolescence, will present "You and Your Adult Child: How to Grow Together in Challenging Times" at noon and again at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, April 10, via Zoom.

Steinberg will talk about the most effective ways to address tough topics, from mental health to finances to relationships. Participants will learn about setting boundaries and resolving conflicts while maintaining and deepening their loving relationships with their young adult children.

As you may know, GPS is a locally based educational consortium dedicated to presenting distinguished, relevant, high-profile authors, clinicians, and educators who share research-based knowledge and practical wisdom. The group's mission is to enhance the resilience and well-being of all students by helping them build relationships, develop coping strategies, and forge responsible decision-making skills.

You can go to glenbardgps.org for further information, including links to these webinars. To be placed on a reminder list for GPS events or to submit a question in advance, please contact Gilda Ross, Glenbard District 87 student and community projects coordinator, at gilda_ross@glenbard.org or 630-942-7668. Continuing professional development units are available.
