Help Spread Joy this Holiday Season!

Preparations for the Holiday Basket Program are starting at the Outreach office. Last year we had 46 local families in need of support, they received baskets from the Holiday Program, this included over 1oo children. Additionally, we provided holiday gifts to 75 local senior citizens. The support given to these community members was achieved thanks to the kindness and generosity of our wonderful community!

The Skaneateles Ecumenical Food Pantry Serves our Neighbors

The Skaneateles Ecumenical Food Pantry provides food for residents of the Town of Skaneateles and Skaneateles Central School District who might otherwise experience hunger.

Since 2001, when local churches began the Skaneateles Ecumenical Food Pantry, the pantry has provided healthy food and household necessities to individuals and families in need. Today, in addition to support from the churches, the Pantry benefits from tremendous community support. For example, during the summer and fall months, the Community Garden donates its bounty of fresh produce to the Pantry.

We recently welcomed Rita Keyes as our new director. Rita has extensive knowledge and experience in all aspects of pantry operations. The Pantry is staffed by a dedicated team of volunteers.

We always welcome community donations and prospective volunteers. Our Facebook page has up-to-date information about current needs and a link to our Amazon Wish List.

Do you or someone you know need food? Please contact us to learn more.

Pantry hours:

News from the

Parks Department

Sue Murphy

What a summer! Austin Park, The Charlie Major Nature Trail and The Conservation Area were very busy. The parks employees worked so hard to make sure the community could use the swimming area, farmers market, ballfields, and parking lot in Mandana for their boat trailers.

Waterfront Our heartfelt thanks go out to our awesome lifeguards – They were very busy in the park. Keady Azzam, Regan Barnes, Peter McCaffrey, Hope Azzam, Tritan Boucher, Avery Tomandl, Thomas Parisi and Allison Whipple. Without them we couldn’t have opened.  THANK YOU!!

Farmers Market Another fantastic season is over, many thanks to our wonderful vendors and customers. The continued outpouring of support this year was amazing. Seasoned vendors stated that they saw a lot of new faces this season and it is encouraging to know that there is still a lot of interest in the farmers’ market. The season ends on October 11th.

Playday WOW - What a time we had! We had over 200 campers, and the campers were full of energy, excitement, and exhaustion. Their field trip to SkyZone was a huge success. Kim Ramsden Kelly, Playday Coordinator, did a great job of organizing and overseeing this program. Kim, herself was a playday camper, camp counselor and now coordinating, some things just go full circle. For seven weeks, we worked hard, laughed hard and played even harder. At the end of the program, there were sad tears from both campers and counselors, so everyone must have had a great time! We have already started planning for next year. We want to thank the parents for sending the campers to the program and look forward to seeing them again next summer.

Mandana Parking Lot & Boat Launch Gene LaForte was our front person for the parking lot. Every weekend he was there to charge non-residents for parking, answer any questions one might have, and direct boaters to park their trailers in the right way and in the right direction. His patience and concern for the drivers, vehicles and trailers is greatly appreciated by everyone. Rick Morris, Town Constable, did a great job of keeping the Town boat launch moving and safe. These two were a wonderful duo through this summer. Thank you, Gene and Rick, for being so loyal. A job well done!

Parks Department Reservation Program Continues to be a great success. We will, again, re-access the program over the winter to work out some of the kinks that we had, but overall, a great success.

Text Message Alerts If you haven’t done so, please sign up for the text message alerts. The alerts are not just for the parks, it’s for water emergencies, Transfer Station, Swap Shop, Town Clerk and the list goes on. Go to www.townofskaneateles.gov and sign up. It was used a lot for information on the opening and closing of the waterfront, playday updates and park alerts - those that signed up were so grateful, sign up today! Questions? Call Julie or Paula at the Town Hall, they will help you.

SAVES

Jerry Schinaman

SAVES relies on the annual fund drive to assist in our continued service to the community. Our 2025 fund drive is currently underway. Due in part to the generosity of the community in 2024 we were recently able to purchase a new ambulance. Due to increasing operating costs, we rely heavily on the fund drive to help with expenses. Please consider donating to our fund drive.

In the first 7 months of 2025, SAVES responded to 680 calls. Responding in the Village and Town of Skaneateles represented 65% of the total calls,

“Dial 9-1-1 in an emergency.” This is something that we teach our children. We have noticed that some residents continue to call SAVES directly in emergencies. Although we have crews on-duty 24 hours a day, the large volume of calls and time spent in the ER’S mean they may not be available when you call. If help is needed calling 9-1-1 is the only way to ensure a rapid response. We also recommend preparing lists of medications for family members which can be accessed by first responders in an emergency.

The only thing more tragic than a death is a death that could have been prevented.

SAVES continues to offer instruction regarding CPR and AED use. The CPR classes include techniques for handling choking emergencies. First Aid classes are offered as needed. During First Aid classes, techniques for controlling traumatic bleeding are included. SAVES personnel have conducted 25 First Aid and CPR classes for 130 students so far this year. The 2024 classes were attended by 125 students. Call SAVES, 315 685-5217, for more information or to sign-up. SAVES also offers classes focusing exclusively on controlling traumatic bleeding. There is a fee for these classes.

We are always looking for volunteer members. If you may be interested in volunteering, or you are not sure, stop in and see us. Personnel are always willing to conduct a tour of our facilities and discuss volunteering opportunities.

Have a safe fall.

News From the Village Clerk

Village Brush & Leaf Pick-up

Brush pick-up will begin September 29th, 2025, with October 13th, 2025 being the last day to place brush out for pick-up.

If you have brush after these dates, it may be stored on your property until Spring pick-up commences, taken to the transfer station (permit required; available at the Town office), or removed on a private contract.

A few things to keep in mind:

  • Yard waste must be placed in the area between the curb and sidewalk - not in the street. Yard waste is defined as trees, branches, plants, bushes, shrubs, weeds and garden waste. NO large quantities of dirt or rocks; no plastic plant/flower containers or bags.
  • If there are no sidewalks, place the brush as close to the curb as possible without placing it in the road.
  • Brush must be no longer than five feet in length or eight inches in diameter.

** Please locate any brush, leaves, etc., in the lawn area, and NOT on any sort of pavement such as the driveway or sidewalk. it will not be picked up if not on lawn.**

Leaf Pick-up Will Immediately Follow and will end in December, weather permitting.

As a reminder…

  • Leaves must be placed in the area between the curb and sidewalk - not in the street.
  • Leaves must be placed in a pile (not bagged) and free from brush. Mixed piles of debris will NOT be picked up.

Brush & Leaf Placement:

What is the Power Adjustment, or PPA, on your Village Power Bill?

In short: The Village is allotted a certain amount of hydropower from the New York State Power Authority. When we exceed our allotment, we must purchase supplemental power at a higher rate, which is then reflected in the PPA. This charge, known as the "Power Adjustment" or PPA is reflected on each monthly bill.

The Village of Skaneateles does not generate any power; we distribute it. Our electric rates reflect our base cost for hydropower and our cost to distribute the power over our lines. Due to the cost associated with the distribution, which is in addition to the purchase of the power itself, the NY State Public Service Commission, our regulatory body, has established a base cost per kWh for our system which is deducted from the overall power expense. The balance becomes a charge to our customers on their next bill.
