Lanigan Principal Gregory Smith selected as the new Director of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion for FPS

Current Lanigan Elementary School Principal Gregory Smith has been selected as Farmington Public Schools’ (FPS) new Director of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion. Gregory has been in Farmington Public Schools since 2007. He started his career in 2007 with the District as a Resource Room - Co-Teacher at Farmington High School. Over the years, he also served as the Secondary Summer School Principal and Assistant Principal at Power Middle School before becoming Principal at Lanigan in 2016.

Smith earned his Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education and his Masters of Education in Special Education from Wayne State University. He earned his Educational Specialist in Leadership and Administration from Oakland University and is currently pursuing his Ed.D. from Oakland University.

Smith serves as a board member on the Farmington & Farmington Hills Foundation for Youth and Families and is involved with both the Oakland County African American Administrators Network and the Oakland County Council for Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Social Justice.

“I look forward to continuing to serve our community in a greater capacity. I have had many milestones in my time with FPS, and I look forward to soaring to new heights in the area of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI),” stated Smith. “I believe in community–where everyone has a space and is equipped to use it to their full potential. I am truly grateful and confident that we can continue to advance and improve our practices to ensure every student will receive exactly what they need.”

“We are excited to have Mr. Smith continue the legacy of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion work in our District, and know that his connection to and love for FPS will guide his leadership,” stated Farmington Public Schools’ Superintendent Christopher J. Delgado, Ph.D.

Farmington Public Schools’ Lusiana Maeda, a teacher assistant in the District’s Adult English as a Second Language (ESL) program, is featured in a national broadcast of the 2022 Coalition on Adult Basic Education Adult Education and Family Literacy (COABEAEFL).

In her current role as an Adult ESL Teacher Assistant, Lusiana is able to celebrate and share her successes and experiences at Farmington ESL as an Advanced level ESL student, and a graduate classroom volunteer in the Beginning-Intermediate level classes.

Lusiana was also the 2021-2022 award recipient for the Michigan Adult, Community and Alternative Education Association (MACAE) Support Person of the year. Congratulations, Lusiana, these are both such great accomplishments!

Please listen to her story and experience the Adult ESL program through the eyes of an English learner. The video begins at 4:31:23, and her interview ends at 4:41:20.
Calling all crafters and direct sales consultants!
I am the Fundraiser Chair for the Lanigan PTA and the East PTSA. I have put together two awesome craft shows for this year. East will be on Saturday, November 19th from 10 AM-3 PM. Lanigan will be on Friday, December 2nd from 6:30 PM - 8:30 PM. Each event is asking $30 for a 10X10 space (you need to supply a table, we will supply chairs). Students in grades 6-12 may rent a spot for $10 to sell student made items.

East had an amazing turn out last year. Lanigan hasn't done it since COVID, but we are back, better than ever. We are coordinating this with a school event in the hopes that it will increase attendance for the craft show. If you are interested in renting a spot for either show (or both) please send me an email and tell me what you make/sell. I will send you more detailed information for both shows. debby.kuna@fpsk12.net. I look forward to hearing from you!
