RSVP Reflections

Retired & Senior Volunteer Program

February 2026

"Volunteerism is the voice of the people put into action. These actions shape and mold the present into a future of which we can all be proud.” – Helen Dyer

The Power of RSVP in Our Community

This year AmeriCorps and many others have partnered with the U.S. Semiquincentennial Commission to be part of America250. This month we are sharing information on America250 and their initiatives.

America250

A Milestone in the Making: Our Journey to 250

On July 4, 2026, our nation will commemorate and celebrate the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. The journey toward this historic milestone is an opportunity to pause and reflect on our nation’s past, honor the contributions of all Americans, and look ahead toward the future we want to create for the next generation and beyond.

America250 is striving for “350 by 250” — our goal to engage all 350 million Americans by our nation’s 250th anniversary. Join us in celebrating America’s Semiquincentennial by sharing your story through Our American Story or America’s Invitation, inviting students to describe what America means to them as part of America’s Field Trip, or helping make 2026 a record setting year for volunteer service through America Gives.

America Gives

America Gives is an initiative that challenges businesses, non-profits, schools, youth groups, faith-based networks, and organizations of all kinds to commit to increasing their level of volunteering and impact starting on January 1, 2026. Together, we will build on America’s legacy of giving back and inspire a renewed culture of service for years to come. Help us make 2026 a record setting year of volunteer service. Join people and organizations across the country in giving back — from service projects to donations — to honor America’s 250th.

Add Your Volunteer Hours to the Count!

As part of America Gives, America250 is donating $1,000,000 in 2026. Of those that log hours 250 people will be selected to choose where the donations go. Go here to add your hours to this initiative.

You can check out the America250 site here.

Volunteer Opportunities

The volunteer opportunities this month come from RSVP Station Visits that are being done by the RSVP Advisory Council. If you are interested in volunteering at any of these places, please reach out to Elle via email or call her at 920-832-9360. All of these places offer training for whatever role you choose to volunteer in.

Fox Valley Literacy

Fox Valley Literacy provides a combination of one-one-one and group sessions for students. Fox Valley Literacy, located in Appleton, is looking for childcare help. Do you enjoy playing with babies and toddlers or helping bigger kids learn and play? Come facilitate playtime, enriching activities, and discovery for children while their parents are learning various literacy skills at Fox Valley Literacy. Many of our students have young children and we need your help to offer safe and supportive care for them while their parents get to learn. Urgent needs: Mondays-Thursdays, from 9 a.m.-11 a.m. and from 4 p.m.-7 p.m. Fox Valley Literacy staff will provide training, games, and snacks. The parents will take care of diaper changing and bathroom needs.

The Salvation Army - Fox Cities

The Salvation Army provides a wide range of programs to individuals and families in need. The Salvation Army in Appleton has many volunteer opportunities. One current, specific need is for someone to help in the food pantry every Wednesday from 8am to noon.

Harbor House Domestic Abuse Program

Harbor House is more than a shelter - they are a regional leader in the movement to end domestic and sexual violence. Harbor House is in need of someone to help in their food pantry every Tuesday from 9am to noon. They are also looking for retired nurses to volunteer as SANE (Sexual Assault Nurse Examination) advocates.

RSVP Station Highlight

Each month we will be featuring one of the nonprofits that partners with the Volunteer Fox Cities RSVP program.

February Station: Reach Counseling Services, Appleton

Location: 400 N Richmond Street, Appleton

About

Mission: To heal lives and transform communities.

Reach Counseling is a sexual assault service provider for children and adults that offers culturally responsive outreach, prevention education, victim advocacy, trauma counseling, and sex offender treatment. Reach envisions a socially just community that prioritizes and empowers healing for all impacted by sexual violence.

Want to Help?

Reach Counseling provides crisis intervention and emotional support 24/7 to survivors of sexual abuse and their friends/family with the help of Volunteer Advocates. Volunteer Advocates are on call nights, weekends, and holidays when the Reach office is closed.

Volunteer Advocates are trained to provide emotional support, crisis intervention, information and resources to survivors of sexual abuse and assault in Winnebago County. Advocates provide these services over the phone or in person at a local hospital. Advocates work alongside medical and legal professionals to ensure survivors are supported while navigating these processes, reducing further trauma and re-victimization while tending to a survivor’s emotional needs.

Advocates must have a driver's license, car insurance and vehicle while on call. Advocates take calls through their own phones and never have to be at the Reach office while on call. Advocates must be aware they will hear details of sexual abuse and assault and should know how hearing these stories will impact them. Advocates are in charge of how many and which shifts they take and the schedule is very flexible.

This opportunity may be a good fit for former nurses, educators, social workers and therapists.
