The Jaume family has been producing some outstanding white wines for many years now, but one that is often overlooked is their Viognier. I normally find myself searching our arrival list for the wine just as the warmer weather starts to set in. Viognier is a bit of a chameleon. It can range from soft and silky to bright and sharp. As well, the flavor profile can be anywhere from stone fruits to herbal.
Outside of the famed Condrieu region of the Northern Rhone, where the average price of Viognier is around $90 a bottle, you really don't see many producers pushing the wine. Sure, here in Virginia it is has been adopted as the "go to" grape, but that is a story for another day. Eden Valley in Australia has produced many of note, but we don't see a lot imported. Chile has recently produced some outright amazing examples of this grape.
For today, we are focusing on a Viognier with a proven track record vintage after vintage. On the nose, the wine takes a fruit forward approach with aromas of tangerine, peach, and citrus. Medium-bodied with succulent fruit flavors consisting of white peach and apricot. Focused and bright on the rounded finish.
I enjoy these wines young, drink them over the next 2 years.
