RISE Communities began their week in the beautiful gardens of the Clevedale Inn marking the beginning of WIN Week 2023. This reunion was a time to reflect and share stories about how communities had kept their neighbors safe through the pandemic, the challenges and lessons learned. People gathered around storyboards and exchanged the “how.”

“The sessions were participatory, inspiring, challenging, thought-provoking, and uplifting. As people networked and eased into the mood, we wished for yet another week in Spartanburg! The storytelling was topnotch, and our virtual spaces were equally as warm and alive with ideas and experiences as was the mood in C.C Woodson. WIN week ended in style, almost as though it was just taking off. We're still a tiny bit jealous of in-person attendees who got to take a tour around three neighborhoods of Spartanburg. Thank heavens for the virtual slots that bridged distances for some of us who could not make it in person.”

Fox Cities, a region of 19 municipalities in central Wisconsin, is like many communities across the country, but it’s doing something different. People love living there for all the area has to offer: a small town feel with great cultural and social amenities, vibrant green spaces, good jobs and schools, and general safety.But, as in many other communities, there are residents who feel like they are not thriving and that they don’t belong. A few years back, in response to a shifting economic landscape, increased diversity, growing poverty, and businesses struggling to fill new positions, long-time residents started asking, “What will happen to Fox Cities?” “How can we ensure that this community remains a great place to live for generations to come?”

The Urban League of Metropolitan St. Louis was recently featured in several local news stories. The highlight was how their RISE-supported initiatives, Grill to Glory and Porches to Pulpits, are creating opportunities to address community needs and crime prevention. Through partnerships with local churches and church leaders, they are restoring civility in their neighborhoods. | |
The Urban League of Metropolitan St. Louis has over 180 churches involved in their Grill to Glory initiative which provides an inviting community activity each week that encourages and draws neighborhood family participation. | |
FEMA resilience guidance listening sessions | |
FEMA is hosting a series of 60-minute listening sessions to gather input from across the whole community to inform the development of actionable resilience guidance and resources. They want to hear from you! Sharing your wins and challenges in the journey towards resilience can help others learn from your experience.
Sessions will include facilitated discussions with a range of stakeholders. Advance registration is required and on a first-come, first-served basis.

Increased Use of Telehealth Services and Medications for Opioid Use Disorder During the COVID-19 Pandemic Associated with Reduced Risk for Fatal Overdose

“At a time when more than 100,000 Americans are now dying annually from a drug overdose, the need to expand equitable access to lifesaving treatment, including medications for opioid use disorder, has never been greater,” said Wilson Compton, M.D., M.P.E, deputy director of the National Institute on Drug Abuse and senior author of the study.
"This study shows that many beneficiaries were able to utilize opioid use disorder-related telehealth services during the pandemic, but we need to continue our efforts to broaden the use of telehealth, particularly in underserved communities.” “CMS is committed to ensuring that the beneficiaries we serve can access the high-quality behavioral health services they need,” said senior author Dr. Shari Ling, M.D., Deputy Chief Medical Officer at CMS.

Long COVID or post-COVID conditions

Most people with COVID-19 get better within a few days to a few weeks after infection, so at least four weeks after infection is the start of when Post-COVID Conditions could first be identified. Anyone who was infected can experience Post-COVID Conditions. Most people with Post-COVID Conditions experienced symptoms days after first learning they had COVID-19, but some who later experienced Post-COVID Conditions did not know when they got infected.
There is no test that determines if your symptoms or condition is due to COVID-19. Your healthcare provider considers a diagnosis of Post-COVID Conditions based on your health history, or by symptoms or exposure, as well as doing a health examination.

Yield Giving announced a $250 million open call to fund impactful organizations focused on working with people and in places experiencing the greatest need in the United States: communities, individuals, and families with access to the fewest foundational resources and opportunities.
The Yield Giving Open Call — managed by Lever for Change — will award unrestricted gifts of $1 million to 250 community-led, community-focused organizations whose explicit purpose is to enable individuals and families to achieve substantive improvement in their well-being through foundational resources. This includes, for instance, organizations providing access to health care, stable and affordable housing, education and job training, support for sustained employment, asset ownership, civic engagement, and other pathways.
