Geology and the Flood, the Big Picture
During 2018 we have studied geology
and how it relates to the Creation and the Genesis Flood. We have looked at the rock layers and the divisions between them. Just as importantly we have also the fossil content and the radioisotopes in those rocks that are used for dating. How did all of that get there?
The conventional reasoning
is that all of the rock layers were laid down slowly and gradually over more than a billion years. Over the last 600 million years of slow deposition, samples of the developing life was entombed as the fist cell slowly evolved into more complex life forms and eventually into all of the life we see around us today. Conventionally emphasized aspects of radioisotope dating appears to support that conventional conclusion. Usually this is the only evidence that is considered and anything that does not fit with this line of thought is considered an anomaly that is sure to be explained someday by further scientific progress.
The young creation hypothesis is a very different framework that can explain all of this data including many of the "anomalies" mentioned above. This hypothesis asserts that an original created environment had a very large and diverse range of lifeforms over all the land. Sometime substantially later everything on the surface was ripped up along with some thousands of feet of rock layers by violent surges of a catastrophic flood occurring on a worldwide scale. These catastrophic surges would capture or sample various parts of the preflood environment as the flood progressed from lower to higher elevations. As each surge lost momentum and partially retreated back toward the sea it laid down the entrained life forms in new layers that would become rocks and fossils. I will refer to this framework as the YEC hypothesis.
The YEC hypothesis explains the fossil content
of the rock layers better than evolutionary theory. For example even secular research over recent decades have shown that only 5% of the fossils appear in a developmental sequence expected by evolution. The remaining 95% shows no change called stasis or shows random changes unlike evolutionary expectations. Other genetic research shows that deleterious change are so overwhelming that devolution is to be expected and that is what is observed in the present. For many years large portions of our all DNA was thought to be nonfunctional leftover rejects of natural selection. This nonfunctional DNA was dubbed "Junk DNA" and used an evidence for evolution and against purposeful design. The international ENCODE research project has shown that "junk DNA" is in fact functional in ways that are too complex to be previously recognized.
In short this is evidence of super intelligent design, not evolution. Further in the fossil record there are many example of "living fossils" that have remained unchanged over vast periods of conventional geologic time. There are also many "Lazarus fossils" of lifeforms that appear to exist for vast periods, then disappear for vast periods, and then reappear again. All of that is difficult for evolution to explain but easy for a catastrophic surging flood to explain.
Radioactive carbon C-14 is found in all fossil carbon throughout the fossil bearing rock layers.
Yet C-14 goes through radioactive decay so fast that it will completely disappear in a hundred thousand years! So, all of the fossil bearing rock layers are less than a hundred thousand years old. The usual retort is that it is contamination, but if so one must explain how all of those rock layers became contaminated with C-14 less than a hundred thousand years ago. No one has been able to do that. Furthermore, over the last decade the large bones of dinosaurs have been discovered to have some soft tissue still in them. Many of these
have been C-14 dated and they all come up in the age range of 20 to 50 thousand years. All of this is consistent with the YEC hypothesis but it strongly contradicts the conventional slow and gradual over hundreds of millions of years concept. Many of the most sophisticated old age isochrone dates are very contradictory to one another. Some give billions of years while the surrounding geology demands less than a million.
So, where did the C-14 come from? It came from the C-14 in the preflood biome including all animals, plants, and microorganisms of every kind. All of those, of course, got the C-14 from the preflood atmosphere. That biome was much more extensive and diverse that the one we see today.
The rock layers that were laid down by catastrophic surges
are in very extensive flat and parallel layers over intercontinental areas. Solid data assembled from oil well drilling logs all over the world show these layers are far more extensive than could be possible form the slow rise and fall of sea levels over millions of years. It takes catastrophic world scale geologic events to generate intercontinental scale rock layers.
Further the erosion rates measured over the Earth today are far too fast to allow the accumulation of such rock layers over hundreds of millions of years. Given the presently measured erosion rates it would take only about 14 million years to remove all of the continental rocks above sea-level. If that process had gone on for hundreds of millions of years the rock layers would not look anything like what we see today. Nor would they have the fossil or isotope content anything like we see today.
Even conventional geomagnetic research at Steens mountain
show magnetic pole reversals in about two weeks as new lava layers cooled! That surely indicates world scale catastrophic processes. Also, conventional geologic research has revealed mechanisms that can rapidly raise plutons through the continental rocks above subduction zones observed today. This points to rapid formation of mountains like the Sierra Nevada.
What would generate the continental scale surges
in the Flood? Even today continental edges above subducting ocean
plates stick to the subducting plate as it goes down. When the tension in the continental rock builds up enough, the continental rock breaks loose and snaps back to it unstressed position. That snap back can generate a sizable tsunami. Geophysical simulations indicate that catastrophic plate subduction at around one meter per second would pull the continental edge down a mile or more, way under sea level before it snaps back. This would be happening something like every hour at various places along the subduction zones. Each would generate a tsunami vastly larger than anything seen today.
It is this catastrophic subduction process that also moves the continents around
at about 1 meter per second. That could move the continents through fairly well established paths from something like the early Rodinia configuration before the flood to something
close to the continental configuration seen today. That catastrophic subduction would move the cold preflood ocean floors into the Earth's hot mantle, much of it down near the liquid core. It would also circulate much of the hottest mantle near the core up toward surface areas between subduction zones. The temperature difference of these huge bodies of rock would be about 3000 degrees Celsius. Tomographic studies of the Earth's interior indicate that is exactly right.
Now consider those tsunamis
for a moment. The water velocities would easily reach cavitation speeds. That cavitation would rip up a huge amount of rock grind it up and suspend it. The suspended rock would add greatly to the immense erosive power of the cavitation. Large bodies of moving water have a strong ability to sort entrained sediments by grain size and density and deposit it in different layers. That would likely make a large contribution to generating the large layers of mudrocks and immense layers of cross bedded sandstones spread over immense continental areas.
These are just the highlights
. On January 3rd we will recall more of the associated details but we will emphasize the all-important big picture. We will also look at the ongoing research efforts and the challenges that still need innovative solutions. We will invite questions and discussion along the way. Examples of Important YEC Scientific Evidences
Some major examples of physical evidence we point to include:
- Remains of original soft tissue still found in dinosaur bones. Along with that tissue is C-14 that would decay completely away in less than a hundred thousand years, a tiny fraction of the dinosaur fossil's supposed age.
- For many years geologists have found C-14 in fossil carbon throughout the fossil record.
- The origin of the information and molecular machinery in the first living self-reproducing cell remains a complete enigma for biologist and biochemists.
- In the origin of the universe, big bang theory is being recognized as a dead end by increasing numbers of secular scientists. The hypothesized inflation has nothing to start it, drive it forward, or stop it. Without inflation fatal flaws appear with the absence of predicted antimatter, magnetic monopoles, or any means for the whole universe to come to the same precise background temperature. Then the formation of the first stars is as enigmatic as the origin of the first biological cell. Dark matter and dark energy are as enigmatic as the deep space motions they are needed to explain.
At the root of all standard science are many assumptions that may be quite incorrect. At the top is that there is no God. Another is that present process can be used to explain everything in the past. When we look at a canyon we are taught to assume the river at the bottom cut the canyon. But perhaps tectonic events made the canyon and there is a river at the bottom because water always flows downhill. At the root of big bang theory is a pure assumption that has been named the "Cosmological Principle". Perhaps inaccuracies there are responsible for the big bang's multitude of problems.
