After a two-year hiatus our popular open streets event, Beach Streets, is back! This year’s Beach Streets University will take place on Saturday, September 17, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and span neighborhoods from Atherton Street up to Spring Street, providing safe, open areas for people to walk, bike and socialize.

Friendly reminder that we are hosting our last virtual budget community meeting next week for the upcoming budget. We still need your feedback! If you cannot attend please provide input on the proposed budget by completing the Digital Budget Comment Card, available in English, Spanish, Khmer and Tagalog, and at our a Long Beach Public Library locations with open computer labs.

We also have an important message from our Long Beach Water Department. An emergency repair to a pipeline bringing water to Southern California has led to a regional call for significant water use reduction for up to 15 days starting Sept. 6. Metropolitan Water District of Southern California. We have all the information below.

Region Asked to Conserve More During Pipeline Repair
An emergency repair to a pipeline bringing water to Southern California has led to a regional call for significant water use reduction for up to 15 days starting Sept. 6. Metropolitan Water District of Southern California, or MWD, the agency that provides imported water to much of the region, needs to repair a leaking pipeline that brings water from the Colorado River to the region. MWD is calling on residents of areas that receive water through this pipeline to do everything they can do reduce water use while the pipeline is shut down, emphasizing that the most effective way to do so is to suspend all outdoor watering.
City of Long Beach Transitions Monkeypox Vaccine Pre-Registration System to MyTurn
As of Friday, Aug. 19, the City of Long Beach Department of Health and Human Services will transition the monkeypox vaccine pre-registration system to MyTurn, the State’s vaccination notification and appointment system. This transition will help manage efficient and equitable vaccine distribution as supply increases.
Parks, Recreation and Marine Day Camp Jamboree Brings Summer Fun for Kids
After a two-year hiatus our Parks, Recreation and Marine's day camp Jamboree returned on August 12. Over 450 kids from 12 camps enjoyed water play, crafts, and games at the El Dorado Regional Park. The Jamboree kicked off with performances from each camp as Bailey the LA Kings Mascot and the crowd cheered each group on. The LA Kings added to the fun with ball hockey, giveaways and of course Bailey’s appearance.
Long Beach Parks, Recreation & Marine to Offer After-School Program for Youth; Adaptive Programs for Youth and Adults Also Offered
This fall, our Department of Parks, Recreation and Marine will once again offer programs to safely engage youth after school as well as adaptive recreation programs for middle school and high school youth and adults, providing fun and enriching experiences such as art, games and fitness activities designed for people with disabilities.
Fourth Annual Ranchos Walk Takes Place September 10
We invite you to the community to experience Long Beach on foot at the Fourth Annual Ranchos Walk event on Saturday, Sept. 10. The City’s Office of Sustainability, along with Departments of Public Works, Health and Human Services and Water, is partnering with Walk Long Beach, Rancho Los Cerritos, Rancho Los Alamitos and the Historical Society of Long Beach to host this free urban hike, where participants will take a stroll through local history as they follow a path that links Rancho Los Alamitos and Rancho Los Cerritos via the summit of Signal Hill.
City of Long Beach Celebrates Groundbreaking of New Affordable Housing Community for Veterans
The City of Long Beach in partnership with nonprofit developer Century Affordable Development, Inc. (Century) \and other partner organizations celebrated the groundbreaking of The Cove, a new affordable housing development located at the 27-acre Century Villages at Cabrillo community in West Long Beach. The development will offer 89 affordable studios for veterans who have very low-income, earning 30-60% of area median income, and veterans who are experiencing homelessness.
Help Shape New Zoning Regulations for E-Commerce and Delivery-Only Retail Businesses!
Join the City of Long Beach for a virtual community meeting to learn more about the growing demand for e-commerce and delivery-only retail use in Long Beach, such as ghost kitchens, cannabis retailers and distribution centers and provide your thoughts on locations, operating conditions and more. Happening Wednesday, August 31, from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.
City of Long Beach to Begin Enforcement of Registered Short-Term Rentals in Coastal Zone
Starting Sept. 6, the City of Long Beach will initiate the enforcement of short-term rentals (STRs) operating in the coastal zone areas of the City. This action comes as a result of the City Council’s acceptance of the California Coastal Commission’s recommended changes to the City’s STR ordinance earlier this year. Enforcement of STRs across the City has already been in place.
