It's officially fall and we have a lot of spooktacular events happening this October! We are excited to have Shaqtoberfest kick off at the Queen Mary, September 29 through October 31. We have a list of all events happening in Long Beach below!
We are also excited to announce the appointment of Ralph (Bo) Martinez as the new Director of Economic Development for the City of Long Beach. He brings more than 20 years of experience in economic development for various public sector entities throughout the nation, currently serving as Deputy Town Manager for the Town of Parker, CO, and overseeing various town departments, including Economic Development.
With the fall also comes the flu season. Our Department of Health and Human Services is hosting several community flu vaccination clinics at no charge for people without health insurance or those whose health care provider does not offer flu vaccines.

Long Beach City Manager Appoints New Director of Economic Development
|
On Friday, September 29, City Manager Tom Modica announced the appointment of Ralph (Bo) Martinez as the new Director of Economic Development for the City of Long Beach. Mr. Martinez brings to the City more than 20 years of experience in economic development for various public sector entities throughout the nation, currently serving as Deputy Town Manager for the Town of Parker, CO, and overseeing various town departments, including Economic Development. City of Long Beach to Offer Free Flu Vaccination Clinics
|
The Long Beach Department of Health and Human Services is hosting several community flu vaccination clinics at no charge for people without health insurance or those whose health care provider does not offer flu vaccines. These vaccine clinics will be offered at locations throughout the city in an effort to increase access for all who are interested in receiving the flu vaccine. The flu vaccine will also to be offered at city-run COVID-19 vaccination sites.

City of Long Beach Reports First Case of West Nile Virus This Year
|
The first human case of West Nile virus (WNV) this mosquito season was reported in Long Beach. The person, in their 60s, was hospitalized and diagnosed with neuro-invasive illness, and is currently recovering at home. As of Sept. 16, there have been 54 cases of WNV reported in California this year, with eight of those cases reported in Los Angeles County. Our Health Department has tips on how to protect yourself and your family.

California Department of Public Health (CDPH) released the updated Guidance for the Use of Face Masks, that took effect Sept. 23, shifting from a strong recommendation to wear face coverings in all indoor settings to a more nuanced approach to masking recommendations that is based on the CDC COVID-19 Community Levels. COVID-19 Community Levels are established levels of impact based on hospitalization rates, hospital bed occupancy and COVID-19 case rates. Since Sept. 1, Long Beach has been in the Low COVID-19 Community Level. The City of Long Beach will align with the new CDPH Guidance for the Use of Face Masks.

Long Beach Parks, Recreation and Marine to Offer Adult Recreation Sunday League Baseball This Fall
|
Our Department of Parks, Recreation and Marine will offer their popular adult baseball league this fall, with the new league kicking off Oct. 16. Team and individual registration begin Tuesday, Oct. 4, online and in person.

Port of Long Beach PHOTOPROGRAM Exhibit Happening in October
|
Photographs from the Port of Long Beach’s PHOTOPROGRAM will be on exhibit in the lobby of the Port Administration Building, 415 W. Ocean Blvd., Long Beach, from Oct. 5-31, in conjunction with October's Arts Month. The gallery is open weekdays only from 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. The Port of Long Beach’s PHOTOPROGRAM is an annual partnership with the Arts Council for Long Beach. Port staff shared photographic techniques and gave local professionals and amateurs a chance to apply what they learned on a harbor tour.

City of Long Beach Celebrates National Digital Inclusion Week
|
The National Digital Inclusion Alliance has declared Oct. 3 through 7, 2022 as National Digital Inclusion Week (DIW), an annual week of awareness, recognition and celebration where digital inclusion practitioners across the country promote their digital equity and inclusion efforts. To celebrate DIW, the City of Long Beach will be showcasing on the City’s social pages its community-centered solutions that promote digital equity and inclusion in Long Beach.
